Default Side view mirror vibration...

I have devoted several hours of online research time to this issue but have yet to solve the problem. The driver's side mirror glass on my 2001 xj8 shakes when at highway speeds. I have removed the glass many times to try various ways of making it more steady. My most recent attempt was to use double sided tape to firmly secure the mirror to it's bracket; this seemed like the perfect fix. However, the vibration is still there. Since the glass was FIRMLY attached to the bracket and still shaking I must assume that the mounting bracket assembly is somehow shaking. The external mirror assembly seems very solid, so I feel confident that the vibration is coming from within.

Any words of wisdom? Can the mounting assembly that the glass attaches to be removed fairly easily?

Thanks.

I am interested to see what people have to say, I have having this issue myself.

Dunno if you have noticed this on yours, but on mine the whole housing is shaking. I am thinking the part where it pivots (to fold it back) is loose or something. Just haven't mustered up the ambition to look into it.

Dunno if that helps, but if anyone has some insight that'd be great!

Don't know if there is a fix, if someone finds one I'll be interested, but rest assured this is a long time problem that also exists on the X300 mirrors, which are the same as X308 mirrors.

The issue has been discussed on the X300 forum as well, with no clear solution.

....my X300 XJR drivers side does it too, even the passenger side a little. I've just decided to get used to it.

Default What specifically?

Has anyone ever pinpointed exactly "what" is shaking? Is it the glass itself, the motorized mount that its attached to, the whole assembly?

I took it apart again last night, for at least the 8th time. I tightened any screw I could find, epoxied (sp?) a small crack in the mounting bracket, re-applied two-sided tape etc. Going to work this morning it actually shook worse!

How do you remove the motorized mount? Is there a very good diagram available for disassembling the mirror and all of its components?

I have accomplished some cool things working on cars; I'm not really to keen on the prospect of being beaten by a mirror! haha

On mine, it is the outside cover that vibrates -- usually at slower speeds on rougher roads.

Is the mirror snapping all the way home in the locator clips? If the mount is firm and you can test by slowly pushing the thing up-down-side to side then it could be the mirror glass not fixed in 100%. If you remove the small triangle trim inside the door at the back of the mirror there's a large torx headed bolt that might need tightening too.

I certainly had this issue on my X300/XJR. Very annoying to not have a clear image in the mirror. And, once noticed, impossible to ignore.

The 'fix' for my car was to repair the source of the (very subtle) vibration. U-joints, in my case. Or was it the driveshaft center bearing? I've already forgotten.....but it was sending a vibration thru the body of the car.

Anyhow, the mirror vibration went away.

Cheers

Sean, does the plastic triangle inside the door just "pop" out? I would love to check that, but don't want to break anything while getting to the torx bolt.

Mine ONLY vibrates on less than perfect interstate at around 65 miles per hour and above, which is 90% of my driving. When it starts though, it shakes pretty good.

Mine did the same thing, moved very slightly back and forth at highway speeds.

I took it apart and found a crack in the mirror mounting frame itself, the part the mirror snaps into.

Fixed the cracked part with some superglue and now it does not vibrate.

Remove the mirror and the front cover and I think you will find that someone cracked the frame when re-installing the mirror.

In my case it was my fault, I broke it putting the mirror glass back in.

Also, replacement mirror assemblies are available on the 'bay at reasonable cost to use for parts, especially if you don't care what the outside looks like.

You may be on to something with the cracked bracket. Mine is cracked, but I thought I had fixed it with epoxy. I took it apart again today to find that I apparently separated the crack again when re-installing the bracket. I used superglue this time, like you did, so it bonded very quickly. The mirror glass feels stiffer now, so I am hoping the problem is solved.

I am taking the kids to the movies this afternoon, so I will find out soon if this worked.

Thanks

Hrmm, interesting and helpful. I have to pop off my covers to repaint them (or replace with chrome, still debating) and I can look at the frame then.

Back from the movies...the mirror still shakes at high speeds.

Surprising issue on what was a $57,000 car but I guess it's possible someone could have abused it in the past and maybe it's not a manufacturers defect.

I've lifted the triangle up and inwards and it popped off after separating from the factory glue.

I never reglued it after repair and so it doesn't really sit flush at the top but it holds secure from the bottom.
