Default Tell difference between 3.2 and 4.0 engine

Hi all,

Is there a way to tell difference between 3.2 and 4.0 engine, besides the plastic engine valve covers?

I have a XJ8 Sport, with what I believe had a 4.0 litre engine. I've recently discovered it has a different engine number to the one it left the factory with. The car left the factory with a 4.0 litre. So the VIN wouldn't be much use?

Someone has attempted to scrub the 3.2 on the plastic engine cover. So it's left me unsure whether its a 3.2 or 4.0.

The current engine number 0206190423, so from what I can gather it's an 2002 engine? Is there a way to verify it's a 4.0 and not a 3.2 (hopefully without taking it apart)?

Thanks in advance
Michael

The huge pain of changing to anything but the same kind as OE means it'll be 4.0 still.

Take the cover off, post a photo of engine without it.

3.2L did not have VVT
4.0L did have VVT
4.0L supercharged did not have VVT

So, do you have the VVT solenoids at the front of each head, poking out of the cam covers?

Thanks. I didn't know the 3.2's did not have VVT.
So are you refering to this ...

...as the VVT solenoid?
