Default Tensioner question

So I just wanted to ask since it's kind of been variable about the tensioners. I know that 2001 or 2002 and upwards models have pretty much all of the major problems fixed of this gen Jag, but are there any year models that have metal tensioners from the factory? Or all of them only aftermarket and replaced on existing engines?

Engine build date is, I think, midnight August 13th 2001 - the USA market date the model year 1 year in advance, so all US '2002' models built after mid august should have the updated engine.
The date is stamped (backwards, eg 01-08-13-00-00) on the block, again from memory the 3rd rib back drivers side for LH -
But, this isn't set in stone, or the VIN numbers that go with those engines but it is a very good indicator that a car built after this date does have an all metal timing engine.

Er... not "built after" as an engine may be built well before the car. Look at the actual engine, not the car's build date.

can someone please tell me where exactly is the engine number is located on the motor. I've seen several vague diagrams, but I am still unable to locate the stamping.
Note:: I'm 64 and wear glasses.
thanks
Clive

Thumbs up Open Pandora's Valve Cover

Doc_S.,

I have absolutely no "Jag Cred" to give anyone else advise. So I'm handing out some advice;

When in doubt, take a look. If an X308 is new to you, take a look.
If you or someone you trust has not yet opened the engine and inspected,
take a look.

Even if you have evidence the tensioners were done years ago, take a look.
Some early replacements appear to have been done with 1st gen. units. Whatever was in the stockroom drawer, I guess? (ask me how I know!)

You may find all is well. Which is much better than bouncing valves off of pistons.

Yeah, I have to agree. It's really not that hard to check what you have in the car. It will give you peace of mind as well, ask me how I know.

If you get a 2003 it’ll have the metal tensioners. My 2002 had the second generation plastic.

That sounds like it cannot have the most up to date tensioners.

I had the metal tensioners installed. The car originally came with the second generation plastic tensioners. That’s why I said previously, if you want to ensure a car has metal tensioners, get a 2003.
