New to the forum and hopefully i will be a regular.
here is the scenario, recently purchased a new Corolla thinking that great gas milage & reliability of a nwer car is what i wanted but find myself bored and not happy :-)
So went to my Toyota dealer ship the other day and they did offer buying back my new corolla without loss for trade of any car in their lot and they have a 2002 XJ8 VDP, with sunroof etc etc, everything and condition is like new, inside looks bran new almost. Service records look great with a recent full tune up. 76K on the clock with a price of $9600, seems like a good price to me but have never researched Jag's. is it?
The ride is amazing by the way, coming from my Corolla i felt like a oil sheikh :-)
And more importanly, do about 12 miles of highway driving each way, 5 days a week with no traffic really. Other than having to spend more in gas of course woudl this be a good car for the job? Also enjoy long rides in the weekends with the kids and the wife's minivan doesnt cut it for me :-)
How woudl reliability and maintance cost be. Assuming that this is after Ford took over it's OK. And any things i shoudl check at this milage?

New Toyota vs 10 yr old Jag, for a 100% warranted reliable go to work car.
Your choice, but from your criteria, I'd stay with the new car (ANY) rather than rely on a used car (ANY).
Now if it is just passion and enthusiasm, buy the Jag, and the Devil take the Hindmost.

These cars had a number of serious "issues," almost all of which were fixed by the 2002 model year. Despite Ford owning Jaguar, the 1998-2001 cars were problemmatic. So if you go with the 2002, you will be relatively well off.
HOWEVER, a Jaguar is not a bulletproof-reliable, drive-it-to-work-without-a-thought kind of car, unless you are lucky and have never sinned.
Peculiar things may go wrong, that will take either detective work or cash to remedy. This web site is testimony to that!
In my opinion, these are fun cars to drive on weekends, not daily drivers on the expressway.
