Trans Fault and Check Engine lights are now on?
Good afternoon everyone , the car sat in the garage for about 3 months went out yesterday for a ride and when i stop at parts store everything was fine. Got back in to go home and car would not move in reverse unless I gave it gas. Then went to go forward and slipped a lot. Got in the road and it seems like it is stuck in second gear.got car home Tried reset and check engine light on and trans fault comes right back on . Feels like stuck in gear. In neutral car wants to go forward, reverse have to hit gas and drive is very sluggish. No leaks and car has been service regularly. Ant ideas? Thanks in advance. Car is 1997 XK8 vin # SAJGX2749VC017644. milage is 148000.

did you actual check the level or do you just think its fine because there are no leaks?
In any case, there are a few key issues with those transmissions, so perhaps a search would help you out.

The LIMP HOME default is 4th GEAR.
Probably the forward drum. ('A' drum)
Common problem with the 5HP24 in Jaguar and BMW cars.
Sorry for delay in posting results of fluid level check. I was putting together my other Cat a 1971 Mercury Cougar XR7 convertible. Just got the fill plug out and fluid level is good a little stream of fluid from fill plug. It is a little dirty but does not smell burnt. Trans was serviced about 20 to 25 thousand mile ago in 2017. Thanks for any help .

Hi Johnny,

I wanted to ask the exact same thing as RJ235: Did you have the car level, the engine running and the ATF temperature around 40°C?
Other than that: If this were a ZF 6hp26 transmission, I would also mention that it could be the 4 tubes and the seal bridge needing to be replaced, which you all find after removing the fluid-pan and then removing the valve body. But I am not sure, of you find the same in a ZF 5hp24, as I did not have to do that yet on my X308. But I did it on the S-Type.
And another idea, which I can only hope makes sense, as I did not fiddle around with that on the X308, but on my X-Type: Thus, hoping that it is the same on the X308: Your failure description made me think that the actual cable connection between your J-Gate and where it ends at the transmission is loose (more likely at the transmission end). I.e. mechanical problem, easily solved... So if you "command" the transmission to be in a certain gear via the J-Gate, but the "command" gets distorted or lost "in translation" the transmission would do something else...

Thanks for the areas to look at. I will check the connections today and let you know. Also after car sat for 2 days I got in and car went into reverse fine put it in Drive and slipped a bit then drove fine. Went down the road and Trans fault came back on with engine light. Car is now in garage. Will let you know about electrical connection later today. Thanks again for replying to me. Car was level and warmed up when I checked the fluid.

WARMED UP will not give an accurate fill level. (above 50 C or 126 F)
I start with DEAD COLD in the morning to get a correct level as 30 C comes up fast while working under the car.
I never let it get above 40 C because 50 C is MINIMUM and I don't like minimum.
