Default Trans slipping

I found which wheel sensor was causing the traction control abs lights to stay on, replaced all 4 but a few days later my wife drove 3 blocks and lost the forward gears, my son backed the car home (reverse is fine) shut it off and forward started to work but with slipping and engaging at higher rpm's, and feels like it's in a higher gear. It's a 1999 XJ8 VDP also the gearbox fault light is on. Thanks in advance for any advice.

If it's slipping (versus popping out of gear) it's almost definitely the clutch. Popping out of gear (ie the shifter actually moves back into neutral) is a different issue and trans related). Slipping when applying significant torque in higher gears is the classic first symptom of a worn clutch. Since the clutch is actuated hydraulically there's no possibility of an adjustment issue like in a mechanically activated clutch or failure mode that would result in a slipping clutch

Ah, I always wondered how these old posts get dredged up like this, and now I've found out fist hand! I intended to respond to a relevant (and recent) post on the X-Type forum and scrolled a little too far and wound up in the "Relevant Posts" section before I hit reply. My apologies for the clutter, it's safe to say this isn't going to be too helpful to any XJ owners.
