Default Transmission fault light

I have a 1999 vanden plans and only yesterday it ran good but all of a sudden in drive it revved up without going forward and the lurched forward again and again. Reverse is fine. Then a transmission fault light came on. Now today the light is out but in gear it still revs like it is in neutral and then catches and lurches forward. My OBD has no fault codes. Any ideas?

How many kilometres/miles on the vehicle currently? Has any other work been carried out recently on the engine or gearbox?

Begin by checking the gearbox fluid level. If fluid level is correct, it may be caused by a faulty torque converter.

Classic forward drum fail???
Probably many TCM DTCs logged but you will need a more advanced reader to log into the TCM.

Maybe low fluid as NBCat stated.

More diagnosis is in your future.

Default 103,000 miles on it

This is my first jaguar, I see no dipstick, should I change the transmission fluid and filter?

I expect Bob has it right, as usual. It's probably A drum failure. Use the search function or google for instructions on checking fluid level in the ZF 5HP24. It's not fun. If the fluid level is good, it's likely the A drum. Do not take it to a dealer if you don't plan on repairing it yourself, find a transmission shop familiar with the ZF, which is used in many BMW's and other foreign cars..
