Transmission trouble

Transmission trouble
My wife was driving the car for a half hour or so with no troubles. Then at a long stop light she put it in park. Light turns green and puts it in gear. Trans takes a minute to catch then finally goes fine. Does it at another light too. Brings car home. I drive car and back it out fine. I put it in drive and takes a minute to catch again. It felt like it caught then when I give it some gas, it does not go, the trans slips then catches at about 2000 RPM Ouch! This all happened pretty abruptly.
Is there a sensor or did the trans probably fail? The dash gave the words Gearbox on the message and the check engine light came on.
Thank You for the help!
Oh yea, Car has 116,000 miles and is pristine. Had it on the lift and has no leaks. How do yo service one of these?

Do you mean "how hard is it for a transmission guy", or "how hard is it for a hobbyist mechanic"? It would not be a good first mechanical project- and many transmission guys will not "repair" a tranny since their charge remove and replace will be significant versus a rebuild or remanufacture. So, you are looking at $1200. or so if you can find someone to repair it IF it is the drum, and about $3000. for a rebuild.

We had our 2001 XJ8 transmission rebuilt last month
Jaguar went into limp mode and displayed "gearbox fault". Also grinding noise coming from the transmission. When we restarted the engine there were no fault message and the car drove as if there were no problems.
The next afternoon it went back into limp mode and this time put up a red light fault in the ECM (engine control module) and showed "gearbox fault".
I called the Jaguar dealership (50 miles away) and was told to have the car towed to them. I asked about the cost of repairing the transmission and thought it was too high.
I had our 2001 XJ8 transmission rebuilt at the only ZF factory authorized ZF transmission specialists in Connecticut. Our transmission failed at 91800 miles. They found a bad freewheel, a internally cracked valve body housing (HSG3) and they changed the valve body main pressure regulator housing, the sprag, installed the new design forward drum, they remanufactured our existing torque convertor, filled transmission with ZF transmission fluid, then tested the transmission on a Dyno.
Their retail price for the rebuild is $3450.00, but I was able to get it at wholesale price of $2295.00 (includes the fluid).
I think that other members of the Jaguar Forums might be able to get it also at the wholesale price. The name of the business is Ekisson Industries, 146 B Elm St, Old Saybrook, CT 06475
Their website link is:

You can call them to get the price and shipping costs.

They also have parts diagrams showing exploded views of all the parts in the transmission on their website.
Our friend has a part time business as a mechanic and has a garage with a lift. He charged us $550 for removing and installing the transmission.

Has your car had the chain tenionsers replaced
1997-2002 Jaguar xj8 have a history of failure of primary and/or secondary timing chain tensioners. We had a secondary timing chain tensioner fail on the driver's side of the engine. We were on the thruway and the engine slowed down and the "restricted performance" came up on our speedometer display. At this point the engine was run on only 4 cylinders. We were lucky that there was no massive damage done to the engine. When our mechanic viewed the timing chains he found that one of the secondary tensioners was broken (this was the cause of engine performance problem) and the rest of the tensioners were cracked/ready to fail. We purchased a timing chain kit that was on Ebay and replaced all of the chains and chain tensioners (Primary and Secondary). The tensioners supplied was all of the 3rd generation design.
