Default Engine noise take two!

Ok here we go again.

started last week, any thoughts? She’s going in for the cam cover gasket replacement when I’m back from holiday, made this noise when I picked her up from the mechanic who did the wheel bearing and he wasn’t sure what it was. Any thoughts chaps? Link below.

Dan.

Timing tensioners probably...when you remove the cam covers, you'll be able to identify it immediately. If you have burnt orange plastic tensioners, they will need replaced. If you have silver metal finish, they've been done, but don't discount they may have gone bad, check the chain tension. I put new ones in mine and about a year later, one of my neoprene guide caps came off and I had to replace the tensioner again.

First, go buy a mechanic's stethoscope. Then troll around to find the source of the noise. Sounds like maybe water pump or belt tensioner -- but need to know front, back, left, right, up, down . . . ? Lots of possibilities. Sort of surprised the tech wouldn't check it out. Just be careful where you put the sound lead -- too close to the whirring parts and you could get hurt; be very careful not to touch those plastic pipes going to the radiator -- they redefine the word 'fragile.'

Second, pull the cam covers and determine whether you have the newer secondary tensioners -- this is critical!

It’s 2001 so it should have the metal tensioners, it seems to be coming more from the middle of the engine not the front too.

Not necessarily that goes according to your build date. Only the late 01's are covered & those are the 2nd gen tensioners @ that.
