Default XJ8 Ghost Alarm

I have a 2001 XJ8. When i set my alarm, 15 minutes go by and the alarm comes on.

i reset and again it comes on. Ive tried disconnecting the battery, locking door with the key and the same problem.

Is there a way to disable th alarm or lock the car without activating the alarm?

Thanks

I believe there is but you'd need a scanner that can access the proprietary Jag programing section. A normal OBD II can't do it.

I know you can set the alarm to be passive or active which simple means it sets itself even if the car isn't even locked, or you have to set it by locking the car with a key or your remote. I would guess that there's a function available to disable it entirely as well.

If I get a chance today I'll take a look with mine and let you know.

Thanks again. I hate leaving the drivers door unlocked. Because of this I stop driving my car and just leave it at home

By "comes on" do you mean it starts making a noise? If so, it needs fixing not bypassing.

1. pull the connector from the bonnet ( hood ) open switch, lock the car and see what happens. The car alarm will still activate and work as normal, except the bonnet ( hood ) will not be covered.

There was water inside mine, dried it out and has been OK since.

2. Check the boot ( trunk ) lid is closing properly, and not opening itself.
This was a broken wire along side the boot ( trunk ) hinge.

Why the alarm only goes off at silly o`clock in the morning ?

That was solved by a neighbour with a video camera .... It was a fox !!!
Saw the video, this fox went down the road jumping on cars at random, setting the alarms off.
After talking to some neighbours, it was not at random. The cars he left alone had no alarm !

Let me add this small detail. If what you were saying is that the alarm 'sets itself' and then goes off when you sit in the car even though you had NOT locked the car that's a different issue.

There are two possible settings within the software that a dealer can set before a buyer takes delivery. One is an 'active' alarm that requires the owner to ACTIVELY set the alarm with the remote or his key while the other option (which insurance companies like) is a ' passive' setting which doesn't require any owner input but rather sets the alarm after about 3-5 minutes even if the door isn't locked. The downside of course is if you forget about that and fail to use your remote to 'unlock' the car before getting in it. If it does go off just press the unlock on your remote to shut the damn thing off.

When you say "switch", all I have is a manual pull lever near driver side kick panel

You're looking for a fault. I expect there's a dealer-readable code to say what triggered it. Often it's the bonnet (hood) sensor, which is easy to bypass to see.

Mine did the same and as already said it was the boot not securely locking. But you have to admit (particularly at night) it is an awesome alarm.

Bells, whistles, sirens, horns and all the lights flashing,I let it go off sometimes just to show off!
Check that eveything that closes is properly closed if you haven't already. Good Luck.

On the core support there is an electrical switch, above the headlamps that makes contact when the bonnet is raised.

Its on the Right hand side on a UK spec X308. Just in front of the windscreen washer fill tube.

If you have a drain on the battery, check the boot/trunk lights go out when the lid is shut.
Easy way to do it, is to set your cell phone to record video and shut it in the boot/trunk then play back the video.

Also, I just remembered, check the ignition barrel, where the key goes in.
There is a little metal flap that pushes in when you insert the key, this should spring back and close when the key is removed.
This tells the car to shut down, if it sticks a little squirt of WD40 or such and work the key in and out a few times should free it.

Thanks for everyones help but the Ghost has been captured. Thanks to Andrew Lowe last Post about the trunk light, which was not the problem. I decided to check everything else in the car and found that my Glove Box was not completely close, thus a drain on the battery and since to circuit was not completely closed, the alarm keep sounding off.
I feel like an Idiot, but lesson learned.

Thanks to all
