Default XJ8 Trunk Button

Lot of threads on the trunk button not working but mine is very unusual.
It appears as if the system goes into Valet mode and when you press the button on the trunk it will not open.
However I can open the trunk with the button inside the car, with the remote, or the key.
If I disconnect the battery for a few minutes to re-set, it starts working but then at some point the same story.
Any idea's? not a major problem just the fact that something does not work right bothers me.

Have you tried a hard reset?
That's where you disconnect the negative battery cable, then hold it in contact with the positive battery cable/post for about 30 seconds.

That seems to straighten out a lot of problems with these cars.

There's a bunch of wires connected to the right hand trunk lid hinge, some of these run the lights and lock, have you read about these wires breaking as they work harden over the years?
I located an earth cable in this bunch that had snapped inside it's shroud, a fast solder and shrinktube job and the lock button works as it should.

Sean, the car has very little milage and very little use so the likelihood of the wires breaking are less but when I do a reset it starts working for a while and I assume broken wire(s) could not be it.= or very unlikely.

Well the answer was damage to the wiring loom and a razor cut that caused intermittent function. Both the wires to the button were cut through cleanly and another had the insulation cut a little but nothing more. The culprit is the plastic cover that fits on the right hand hinge. At the extreme end where the wires would bend as you closed the trunk lead the plastic had a razor sharp burr inside

. I went a little further and reworked that end and again made sure it was clean and no chance of anything cutting through the loom and the wires.
