Default XJR Exhaust Options

Hi,

I'm not on here very frequently because my XJR doesn't tend to break much in ways I need advice for, so sorry if it's a strange name asking for advice.

I had a custom exhaust fitted early December by the local Powerflow place, but I'm not pleased with the sound of the new system. It drones really badly inside between 1/5k-2.5k rpm, ie typical driving revs around town & in traffic. Not only that it's still quiet outside so with the window down I never hear the V8. I'm going to go back to them about it, I've already spoken to them but they are closed over new year.

What I'd like to ask you lot is if you've had a custom system what boxes did they leave out & so forth to get a nicer V8 noise without it droning at you? Then I'll know more when I speak to the supplier about modifying it. My new system has the front box where the pipes join under the gearbox, they left out the boxes before the axle & it's got back boxes. I couldn't find any ready made custom systems around online when I looked before, but have now found one at https://quicksilverexhausts.store/bl...-sport-exhaust which keeps the middle boxes & loses the back boxes.

So go on, show us ya pipes! Or at least tell me what you've got & if it drones/sounds like a V8 please..

I have the X pipe in the middle and this https://www.ebay.com/itm/223746355798

Do NOT run straight pipe all the way. the car will sound like a Harley Davidson and lose the low end torque. I learned my lesson

Thanks, that looks to replace the back boxes, like the system I found & linked too. Do you still have the boxes in front of the axle?

I won't go full straight through, even my HD doesn't sound like a HD as I don't like stupidly loud exhausts.

you mean the mid resonators. Yes, I keep them.

that actually was what I meant I learned a bad lesson. I took them out and ran the straight pipe all the way after the mid x pipe. it sounds like **** and it lost all the low end power.

I ended up re welding them back. so my set up is X pipe at the center, then stock mid resonators then the straight exhaust pipes out

Great cheers, that's how I was thinking of asking them to do mine this time. I think it's those missing boxes, or resonators, that are causing the drone.

I should have asked around before getting it done, but I stupidly believed them when they said they'd done loads of them & knew how to make them sound good.

My setup on my xjr is full straight with x pipe near the front of the by the flex pipes, it’s not loud on the inside no drone but sounds amazing on the outside very nice sound.

Yeah, I have always wondered why members try to change the exhaust sound when they can't hear it.
Maybe my ears are not set right, but I think the stock sound is amazing.

I've a Paramount Performance 'cat back' system installed, they did keep the big box under the trans, fitted a larger bore pipe from it to smaller 'before axle' resonators, then big bore over the axles to lengths of silencers. No drone at any rev range but it's more audible from inside and out.
- I must say this was taken 10 years ago and I've high flow cats fitted now.

X pipe in place of the front muffler, straight pipe in place of the 2 small mufflers in front of the axles, leave the rear mufflers alone. No drone, has V8 rumble and not obnoxious when getting on it hard.

Cheers all, looks like most have gone with keeping the forward boxes & losing the back boxes, except addicted2boost.

I think I'll ask for the centre boxes back & take the back boxes off. Hopefully that'll do it. I couldn't hear the car at all in normal driving before, the supercharger scream was nice but no V8 at all, so it was too quiet for me. There's a black XJR around my way somewhere that sounds like a damn Spitfire steaming past on full boost, it's epic but too loud for me.

My custom made pipes

I have built not too loud pipes but clearly can be heared that there is something else than 6 pot under the hood.
Dynaflow X muffler at the front, superturbo type mufflers at the centre and biggest that could be fitted absort type mufflers at the back. No drone and mellow sound at low rpm but howling sound at wot.

And I opened that front muffler and filled it up with muffler wool.

I did exactly that, except I'm using a Supersprint x pipe. I will later on, go with no kittens and change the rear mufflers. Most likely Supersprint or Mina Gallery.

I guess everyone's formula is pretty much similar here.

It is the quiet "inside" the car that partly makes the Jaguar X-308 such a luxurious ride.
The Duchess (in stock form) maintains that smooth quietness while still exhibiting the
throaty roar under acceleration. True, Jaguar engineering may have been short in some
areas, but the exhaust was not one of them.
