Default 1993 3.2s Transmission Filter

I have a jaguar parts catalogue for xj40 3.2/4.0 1993-94 (vin 667829 to 706757) but only shows part number for 4.0l only. 3.2l must have a filter but i have no idea on the part number, any help would be appreciated.

Regards
Philip

Hi Philip,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us.

I believe your 1993 3.2S has the ZF 4HP22 transmission. A great place to find parts diagrams and numbers is jaguarclassicparts.com, the parts service of the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust. frenchfairplaydriver showed a French version of a diagram. My French is très rudimentaire, but I can tell you that JLM664 is the part number for an oil pan, but not the oil pan for your 3.2L. I think that was just a part that happened to be displayed when frenchfairplaydriver copied the page.

Here's a diagram in English, and I highly recommend you visit the website and view the correct diagram for your car to confirm part numbers for yourself:

Note that our forum sponsors like SNG Barratt, Coventry West and Jagbits can help you get the correct parts, and they offer discounts to Jaguar Forums members.

Cheers,

Don

Just checked all the above for fun Don, and that JLM 664 does show as a filter but for earlier cars only [ from (V)500001 to (V)667828 ] not a late vin/tranny part like the OP requested ...

https://www.jaguarclassicparts.com/uk/part/JLM664

I think the OP is confused (as was I) because the late vin car part catalog only show the 4 litre engine option (of course that isn't the first time the parts catalog has an error ..remember the time Jag heritage refused to sell me thirteen cam cover bolts because they insisted that the parts catalog said the XJ40 had only seven ...)

Good catch, Larry. When I searched JLM664 from the part number search window, this is the list I got:

Ob

Obviously, this list doesn't give all the detail!

Sorry, frenchfairplaydriver and Philip!

Cheers,

Don

As larry confirmed my confusion, have attached pics from parts catalogue, pic 1 from 1990-92 catalogue pic 2 from 1993-94 catalogue,. If you notice the sump pan and gasket in both have the same part numbers so i can assume JLM664 was left out by mistake from the 1993-94 catalogue, and that retailers stick to the parts catalogue not allowing for any errors.

I think you made the right move Philip, IMHO JLM664 is the correct filter for your model.

One thing I would suggest when changing trans fluid ....as you probably know, it isn't possible to drain all the fluid - some stays in the torque converter so using the capacity chart is pretty useless ....best method is to measure how much comes out and replace with same amount.

In lieu of a complete flush, some owners recommend three successive fluid changes with a couple of weeks driving between each one then a filter change on the last change.

That's what I did anyway!

Let us know how it goes, OK?

Philip,

I think you, Larry and frenchfairplaydriver are all correct. As far as I've been able to determine, your 3.2L uses the same hydro-mechanical ZF 4HP22 transmission as the earlier 2.9L and 3.6L cars and not the electronically-controlled 4HP24 used in the 4.0L cars, so JLM664 should be correct.

Sorry to add to your confusion!

Cheers,

Don
