91 xj40 roar 35-40 mph on deceleration
Little hell can't figure out what is going on with my car from 35 to 40 miles an hour most recent on deceleration I get a roaring sound like it might be wheel bearing related U-joint related or something of that nature . All seem tight and correct any help would be great .
It would be worth greasing your U-joints just as good maintenance.
A wheel bearing will usually roar all the time, not just while decelerating, and it may change sound while cornering.
If you have a local shop with the Chassis Ear system, they can strap microphones near various driveline components and listen while driving, which can often help narrow down the area from which the noise is emanating.

If you get a loud click like something is shifting, or if oil is leaking from the pinion seal where the driveshaft meets the differential, then suspect your bearings are shot.
It would be worth checking the level of the differential oil while you have the car up on jackstands or ramps. Your roar could be the diff gears running dry and hot.

Thanks Don yeah that's what I get just a little click going each Direction not much play it all. So it better not be the differential I had Johns cars in Dallas do a swap on that last year because mine was shot. But that noise was totally different and it was constant no the differential is full clean no shavings. Man I am stumped . Think I'm going to have to put a recorder on it somehow different locations and see if I can pinpoint it very strange just at 35 to 40 miles an hour otherwise smooth as a kitten thanks again I'll definitely let you know. It's about got me beat don't have to know if you can go with a 18 or a 19in wheel on these xj40 do you?
Well I've done everything I can think of except have the car into the shop for audio work to try to discern whether this is a bearing noise or otherwise very strange at only 35 to 40 miles an hour on acceleration rarely usually on deceleration .
will update as appropriate.
