Default 91 XJ40 Under Rear Seat Speakers

The under rear seat speakers shot. I went to Best Buy and bought a pair of 4 inch 6 ohm Pioneer speakers. My 40 has a newer replacement head unit hooked up to existing door speakers and wiring to the rear under seat speakers.

However, it seems on my 91 XJ40 the OEM's are 6 inch under the seat (maybe 5 1/4). I thought I remembered my old 88' 40 had 4 inch one's...

But anyway, I went back and exchanged them for a pair of 5 1/4's, but 4 OHM. They fit well in the holes and screw alignment.

But no sound... Could it be 4 ohms will not work, even with a new head unit?

The 1988/89 sedans have different size 'woofers' than the later cars.

Jagbro,

Were the original underseat speakers making any sounds at all? Usually the foam surround deteriorates so the cone rattles around and makes the drivers unlistenable. If the old speakers were at least making some sound and the new ones aren't, are you confident in how you wired the new speakers? Did you have to modify the wiring/electrical connectors to fit the new speakers?

Does your new head unit have separate volume level controls for the outputs to which the underseat speakers are connected, or is it possible those outputs are muted?

Most modern head units have no problem driving 4 ohms. However, it's possible the two underseat drivers are wired in parallel, which would present a load of just 2 ohms, and not all head units can drive that low an impedance. Is it possible that an output protection circuit has been triggered in the head unit?

If you don't have the wiring diagrams for your car, you can download them at jagrepair.com.

Cheers,

Don

Thanks Don. Tracked the current to the speakers and found out, these woofers are routed to an amp, separate from door speakers. My old 88' was not like this. My old 88''s head unit wiring ran all 6 speakers, so I was baffled at 1st.

Anyway I hooked the under seat speakers to the amp, all works good..

New Head Unit is a Pioneer DEH X4800BT (50 Watts x4)

Adequate to good sound, not much low EQ. But my ghetto blasting days are over, so this is fine. $120 including speakers below.. well invested.

Pics of speakers attached (I think).. Pioneer TS-G520's, fit the 5 1/4 holes well (my old 88' used 4" woofers), and are more shallow in depth, no need for mounting modifications...
