Best clear coat for rims?
I searched but did not find a thread so apologies if asked before. I found some model-correct rims for my XJ40. They have now been cleaned. There is some corrosion so going to do the 200,400, 800, 1500, 3000 grit and then some polish. I have now asked 3 automotive 2-component spray paint companies and not gotten a clear answer: What product should I clear coat the rims with, please? I do no want primer, paint, and clear cloat, just clear coat. Wax does not sound very long lasting. There was a 2-component rub-on paint-like product suggested. I would have to do all that polishing and have it be for naught in 18 months. Best Regards from Arizona. Bo
Most XJ40 rims I've seen are satin-finished mags and not high-shine. Mine are diamond-turned Aero style and don't have any coating - after many years of daily use and outdoor parking, corrosion is minimal.
I live in the Pacific Northwest, close to the ocean where I imagine the rims would be far more corrosion prone than in Arizona.
Post a pic of your wheels maybe?

Hi Bo,
Probably the "best" options are bright dipping and clear anodizing from a plating company or clear powdercoating from a powdercoating company.
For DIY options, I have heard good things about the POR 15 Gilstein PC clearcoat on aluminum, but it has been replaced by a new 2K Urethane:

In the past, I have used the acrylic clearcoat from automotivetouchup.com on painted wheels, but I have not used it on bare aluminum. The same company also offers a 2K Urethane clearcoat:
Acrylic Clearcoat
SprayMax 2K Urethane Clearcoat
Cheers,
Don

Those are the best Jag wheels possible for an XJ40 IMO, diamond turned aero alloys, same as mine. The OEM finish isn't high polish, but somewhat matte, like you show.
If you look closely you can see the entire surface is grooved like a vinyl record. I'd give them a stiff brushing and a scrape here and there - if you go for a high polish, that can be done too, one of our members from LA did his (or maybe his PO did) like that, they almost look chromed. Each to their own I guess but personally I prefer the stock matte look, more elegant, less brash and more Jag-ish to me.
Good luck with them, at least you're starting with the best looking wheels jag ever produced!
