Hi -
Decided to renew the rear pads over the weekend but it looks like I've ordered the wrong pads (once again)
Superficially look like they'll fit and physically match up to the old ones - with the exception that they're about 1/8" too thick to install into the calipers.
The last lot I bought (and eventually fitted BTW) were also too thick so I went through the extremely messy job of grinding them down ....I'd like to avoid future mis-orders so if anyone has a brand (other than dealer ones) they can recommend or even the measurement (thickness) of the correct pads, that would be good!
Can't imagine why so many different brands of aftermarket pads were manufactured out of spec?
Swap your used set on there.
Orrrrrrrr.... Your rotors haven't gotten too thick have they?
Did you have the rotors turned? If not, is it just that rust ridge at the edge that's stopping you?
The brands I've had zero problems with are Ferodo, Jurid, Mintex, and Lucas (probably made by one of the previous, all of which are/were Jaguar OEMs. My favorite of all were Ferodo, but at some point they became unavailable in North America. Maybe that has changed. Ferodo seem to also have been the OEM for our '04 with Brembo brakes.
Swap your used set on there.

Jerry, didn't get as far as the rotors!
The pads just can't be inserted into the caliper, about 1/8" (combined) too thick ...one or the other will go in, but when one is in, doesn't give enough clearance for the other pad to go into place.
I ordered Beck-Arnley but the pads were a different manufacturer and made in Australia - don't have the box in front of me right now but I'll check tomorrow.

Hey no problem Don!, appreciate your advice as always!
Weird topic though, these brake pads ..OEM# is JLM1833
Almost all replacements I see out there, regardless of manufacturer, appear to be 16.5-17mm thick. Now either I'm doing something wrong when trying to install them or there are hundreds of parts out there that simply will not install intro the rear calipers!!
Take a look at this lot and check out the pad thicknesses ..
That is really strange, especially given that Mintex, ATE, TRW, Brembo and Ferodo are all Jaguar OEMs. Something is definitely wrong with this picture....
I'm beginning to think this is me and my inability to see how to assemble the pad/calipers ...although ...I phoned Jim (manwich66) last night and he said he'd had to return a set of fronts because they were too thick and said anything over 15mm won't fit ...and that's what it looks like to me too, 15mm would be about max.
Surely I'm not the only guy replacing rear pads? WTF?
Hey Larry,Cheers, The pads I have been sitting on for a loooong time now,are in fact,Raybestos #PDG517M,they mike out at .690",and I haven't even tried to put them into Cin's buggy yet.
Pull the backing plate off(easy) and you are left with .663" .
Makes you wonder..
When I inspected Cin's brakes this summer,Her rear's were fine, 3/8" left easy.
Fronts were due, shocks, brakes, etc.,ran into the same issue,Tooo Fat.won't go.Ordered fresh ones and got it right somehow.
Her car now will out-handle the tires on it by far.
Take a look at the spare (spare) parts buggy and see?
Let us know, Cheers as usual,Jim and Cin.
Mmmmm ...well ignore everything I said about the pads being too thick; they're fine - it was me!
I took the spare caliper and did a dry run tonight and of course once I undid the sliders with the 7mm allen and released the bracket, the pads were able to be installed, no problemo ...
Did the front pads yesterday, of course it was no problem but the weird thing was the pads really didn't need to be changed, there was still plenty of meat left ...
I changed them anyway seeing as I was "in there" - this is the first time I've changed the front pads in 30,000km (18,500 miles) of driving and they looked like they were probably good for at least another 30,000km - that's if they were new when I got the car ...maybe they were?
So I guess driving on the j-gate instead of the brake pedal has it's advantages!
