Default Swapped side light

Bulb warning came on yesterday, checked around, saw the side light in the front bumper was out.

Two Philips screws and two minutes later bulb replaced and all good again ...Got me thinking about the last time I replaced a bulb on our old Nissan Murano ..Wheel off, wheel-well liner removed ..managed to squeeze my fingers through and swap the bulb but manual said to remove windshield washer tank first...Jeez!!

Jag - old tech, thankfully!

Quite possibly this very bulb will be my first "repair" on my new XJ40. (Mine is the right-side front bumper marker.) It's good to know that even these bulbs will cause the "bulb warning" light on the dash to come on.

Like you, two screws, and I had access. I need to hit up the local auto parts store and get a few spares. I hope every repair on this car goes as smoothly.

I suppose your Nissan experience is just what we get with modern cars trying to hide all of the fasteners.. I too, am just fine with the "old way."

Hi Mike,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us!

I hope you'll find time to post some photos of your new Jaguar when you get a chance (and have been here long enough to have photo posting privileges).

Cheers,

Don

Thanks, Don!

I hope to get the car properly spruced up this weekend if all goes well. That should make it a lot more presentable than the two "quick 'n dirty" shots I left in my introduction thread. I might even have a proper hood ornament on it by then. I think the previous owner may have kept it as a souvenir. It appears to have been "recently removed."

I do have good news though. I swapped that bulb out over my lunch break yesterday, and my "bulb warning" indicator promptly went out. Only one "dash light" left to fix now, but it's a biggie.. The "low fuel" light. This thing appears to need a new sending unit.. I ordered one up, and should have it by Friday. I guess we'll find out how big of a job it is..

Replacing the fuel level sending unit is not difficult at all. Just be sure your fuel level is lower than maybe 1/4 tank. Remove the spare wheel, jack and tire-changing tools and pull the carpeted trim panel out. The sending unit is mounted on the rear face of the tank about halfway up, so you want to be sure the fuel level is below that. If I recall correctly, there is a retaining ring that you have to tap counterclockwise at multiple points to rotate it off. I use a bronze punch and a hammer to do the tapping. You don't want to use a steel punch that could create sparks. I'm sure there are photos posted somewhere in this forum or at Jag-Lovers.org or XJ40.com.

Cheers,

Don

This is the best news I've heard all day.

I've replaced a fuel pump, sending unit, or both, in just about every vehicle I've ever owned. Not one was something other than a "drop the tank" affair.. This information pleases me greatly.

'72 Jeep Commando? Drop the tank.
'86 Lincoln Town Car? Drop the tank
'97 Lincoln Mark VIII? Yup. ditto.
2001 Chevy Trailblazer? you betcha. 25 gallon tank!
'93 XJ40 Easy fix - Streak broken!

I also feel like I've now deviated pretty seriously from the original topic for this thread.. I haven't yet determined quite how seriously we take such transgressions on this forum, but I want to be sensitive to starting too many new threads with what could be "basic" questions..

Regardless, I really do appreciate the information you've provided already. I have plenty of experience with cars in general, but these Jags are an entirely new breed. I never really envisioned myself owning one.
Thank you.
