Drive/Neutral input circuit fault.
Do you have Publication S-91???

I see that it is already in the FAQ section as 4.0 engine management guide

js:
There is also a good transmission warning light checklist in the XJ40 E-book posted in the same place. The good news is that this is not an uncommon problem and pretty well documented. With patience and working systematically, there is no reason why you couldn't get it sorted. Though, if you've fiddled too much with the rotary switch, you may end up needing to take to that to a Jag mechanic who will have the special tool required to re-index it. They really shouldn't be moved apart from opening them up for cleaning or inspection. Anecdotally, I understand that a dirty or flaky TPS is frequently the source of intermittent limp mode/tranny light.
If the car is otherwise in good shape, do not lose heart. It's probably a worth while journey to keep plugging away at it. Best of luck!
Scott
