Default Transmission fluid in radiator

Hi I have a 1992 XJ40, noticed that there is transmission fluid in the coolant expansion tank, have flushed out and cleaned but it returns. When I use the shifter going through the gears it gets worse, am presuming because there is pressure there then. I see that the transmission lines go into the radiator to cool the transmission fluid, could these be leaking into the radiator? if so what do I need to do to fix the problem? as anyone else come across this problem? am in the Philippines so access to arts is not easy. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

PAS uses the radiator also.
Probably need a replacement radiator.
Also check the gearbox fluid for coolant?

Thanks for the feedback, I have checked the transmission fluid in the box and cant see any signs of either water or imulsification, I believe that the egress of transmission fluid into the cooling system happens noticeably when the car is running and the gear shifter is moved through reverse and drive, i.e. the fluid line is under pressure. I will attempt to remove the radiator and check the transmission fluid cooling line seals and fittings into the radiator. Could it be the transmission cooling pipes, seals or fittings that are allowing trans fluid into the radiator?

No your radiator tank is HS, the problem is inside. Sorry.

You could fit an aftermarket transmission cooler to solve the problem. This would allow you to continue to use your current radiator assuming it does not have any other issues.

I managed to remove the radiator assembly but had trouble removing both the transmission cooler pipes and the power steering cooler pipes into the radiator. I hadn't seen fitting like these before, push in with O ring seals and just a "tubular" spring clip to hold in the pipes. Strange design! I eventually removed the pipes by fiddling with the spring clips and removing them slowly. Is there a special tool or specific way to remove these type of fittings? Cheers

Hi Kev,

I'm sorry the large images at Jag-Lovers have still not been moved to their new servers, but you can see my thumbnails and descriptions showing how I modified or supplemented a standard quick-connect release tool with a section of brass tubing to work on our '93 XJ40. The fittings on the Jag are apparently metric, but the disconnect tools available in the U.S. are inch fractional. I don't know if metric disconnect tools are available.

Cheers,

Don

Thanks for all the help, don't feel like I am doing this alone here in the Phils now I have ordered the tool for the quick Fit Connectors, next question is where can I buy o-ring seals and the metal spring retaining clips for both the Transmission cooler lines and the power steering cooer lines into the radiator (have already ordered a new radiator )
Thanks again everyone

The new radiator should come with new quick-connect fittings for the cooler lines, but if not, you may be able to transfer the old ones over to the new radiator if they are not damaged. For O-rings, try a shop that makes hydraulic lines or a good independent auto shop that may keep on hand a good assortment of O-rings. Some auto parts stores carry a limited variety of O-rings.

Thanks Don Hopefully the new radiator will come with the spring clips and O-rings ready to plug in the existing cooling pipes. Will order all the parts tomorrow and have them shipped in to Phlippines. Will let you know how the project gets along
