'86 XJ 6: two VINs?
Hi, my car seems to have two VINs: there is one on a tab at the driver's side A-post, which matches the one on the registration.
There is another 17 digit number on a tab on the center of the firewall, where the two tubular braces from the fenders bolt. this number is different from the ne on the registration and on the A-post tab. It has a star at the beginning and end and appears to be a VIN.
What is this all about?

The one on the firewall is what I call the "born with" VIN. It's how Jaguar itself (and most of the world) knows and identifies the car.
That's all fine and well BUT.....
The "born with" VIN does not meets USA requirements. So...Jaguar simply assigns a second VIN that DOES meet USA VIN conventions.
Fairly common situation. I've seen it on other cars as well.
I've mentioned "USA" here but it probably applies to Canada and Mexico as well...although they have have come on board the USA-type VIN system later. Not quite sure.

And one of the reasons various "VIN Decoder" websites often come up with oddball results and VINs of "grey market" cars don't compute when listig a car for sale on USA Ebay, etc..
