Default 87 XJ6 With a few issues

Here are a few picture of our 87 XJ6. It has 81,000 miles and was a one owner(father in law). It has no rust and is in great condition except for the issues below. The only issues we have found that need some attention are
1. A/C not working.
2. Driver side mirror loose.
3. Stitching has come apart on the seat and dash cover has a small crack.
4. Makes a small thud or clunking sound when you decelerate and the car goes alway back to first. Happened only when down shifting to first.
5. Power steering make a squealing noise when cold. Goes away when the car heats up.
6. Gas gauges not working. Think sending unit is bad.
7. The little computer in the center dash flicks off/on

Nothing on this list is to bad that we are not going to fix and trying to keep as original as we can. Love this car.

Can you be more specific?

The system is basically operational but you're simply not getting refrigerated air? If so, perhaps you only need a freon recharge.

Here's some reading:

2. Driver side mirror loose.

The mirror assembly, or just the glass?

A good used mirror should be easy to find, and cheap. Contact David at Everyday XJ

I think some have disassembled the mirror to repair a floppy glass, if that's what the issue is. No personal experience to share, tho.

4. Makes a small thud or clunking sound when you decelerate and the car goes alway back to first. Happened only when down shifting to first.
Likely possibilities

-Worn/broken transmission mounts

-Idle speed too high

-Transmission cable needs adjusting

5. Power steering make a squealing noise when cold. Goes away when the car heats up.

Probably a loose belt

6. Gas gauges not working. Think sending unit is bad.

Sending unit failures are common. One for each tank. Easy to replace.

Can give EZ test procedure if interested

7. The little computer in the center dash flicks off/on
Probably succumbing to old age but sometimes just weak connections. Unplugging the connector and re-seating it might do the trick

Nice XJ6, unusual color....lucky you!

Post back if more details desired on any of the above

Cheers
DD

The A/C blows hot air. The compreser doesn’t kick on. I hope it low on Freon. The side mirror is best described as floppy glass. Will try to see if it came lose, if not will replace complete mirror. I will take the computer out and clean the connector to see if it works. The Jaguar dealer here told me to bring it in and if the car is in good shape, they have a mechanic that can work on it. He said they need to see it first due to the age. So on the 26th, I am taking it in for them to see. It’s in great shape so I think they can help.

Most of your issues sound like minor issues you could do yourself if you are that way inclined. People here will talk you through them.

If the compressor isn't kicking in it sounds like low pressure, with no/low gas in the system the pressure switch won't send a signal to the compressor. Could be as simple as an o-ring needing replacing or something more serious. Best to get a shop to pressure test the system.

Lovely looking car you have there, an '87 is one of the last of the line so has all the benefits of the development work to improve the build quality done after about 1984 when Jaguar gained their independence.

Interesting that the badge on the radiator grill is a british Royal Automobile Club!

Read this posting on how the glass attaches to the three ***** inside:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-glass-189006/

Very worst thing is buying another mirror.

Pretty car!

I second what Doug stated. The mirrors can be taken to pieces and fixed (I used guts out of an XJS unit - same mirror assembly).

Fuel sending units can be restored to working order but it's hit and miss - often less trouble to replace. I've been there and done that.

Sending units are easy peasy.
