Default Cruise Control Switches

I'm connecting up odd bits that are needed with the Chevy/Jaguar marriage and am at the backup light switch work-around. On the gear shift, there is a micro switch that is called an "inhibit switch" and I think it's for the cruise control. The C/C system has (5) switches shown in S57: Brake Light Switch; Brake Operated Switch; Set Switch; Inhibit Switch; and Master Switch. No comment.

I am not going to connect the C/C at this time and would like to use the location of the Inhibit Switch to install a shifter actuated backup switch. But I have to ask, what is the purpose of the Inhibit Switch? I think using this location for the backup switch is a good choice because the new 4L60e transmission doesn't have the same kind of wiring quadrant on the transmission as the Jaguar did. I have already taken the neutral safety wire out of that small harness and connected it to an added micro-switch on the shifter. Backup wires run right by the shifter too.

If anyone knows what that inhibit switch does and would like to share, I would appreciate it.

It allows the cruise control to used only in "D"

(Or perhaps only "D" and "2"....but I'm pretty sure it's just "D")

Cheers

Thanks for the info Doug, it seems like a given that you would set cruise only when in high gear, but I won't judge. I'll be using that spot on the shifter for my backup switch.

in my '84 (built June 1983), that roller switch has 3 functions:

1) it works to keep the cruise ON, when the 3-position switch in the shifter quadrant is set to the middle position, ON.

2) for the reverse lights when the shifter is moved to R,

3) and to prevent the engine from being started in any gear other than P and N.

* a year or two later, the reverse lights switch was moved to the transmission itself. My BW66 does not have a reverse lights switch at the transmission.

On my conversion i intended to go with the gm cruise module, so i needed that switch to stay as designed, so i simply bought a 2nd switch that mounts in place of the spacer, like the xjs tower has. My kit came with a bung to weld in the hole for the neutral safety switch too.
I was able to use all existing switches for the cruise ( after replacing the always hot one on brake pedal, as it was dead)
Keep in mind that if you intend to cruise later, the jag work through grounds and the gm module works through hots, so make those modifications now while it's all apart, or you will be back in there again later...
i have the gm factory service manual on my 94 drivetrain with the wiring diagrams for the cruise control, let me.know if you need them.

How many "pins" does your shifter mounted switch have? Mine only has two, SPST.

If I put C/C back in the car, I will go with something like a Rostra electronic system.

You lost me at "kit", "weld", "bung", and "hole" Darren. Where did you use all those items in connection with the C/C? I used a GM multi-function brake pedal switch (one set of NC contacts and one set of NO contacts) for the lockup converter and the other for the brake lights. Then I used a simple NO switch, on the brake pedal, to trip the C/C when braking.

I'm going to replace the existing Inhibit Switch with a new NO/NC micro switch for the backup lights. I'll probably have to make a new cam to replace the existing one used by the inhibit switch now, don't want to ruin anything that might be needed in the future.

Thanks for the offer of the service manual. My Son is a Tech at local GM dealer and I think I can get anything like that if I need it.

Sorry Jose, yes I was asking you about your switch with 3 functions. As I said, mine only has 2 spades, just on or off. My S3 also looks like it has the transmission mounted reverse and neutral safety switches.

Sorry wasnt trying to confuse the situation.
the jag neutral safety switch and back up ilght switch are mounted to trans, my conversion kit from suncoast came with a bung that gets welded into the shifter tower and is threaded for an older style neutral switch ( to work with the gm trans) the other switch i added brought the reverse light co trols to the shift tower as well. Just remember to pull them up and in from under car before i stalling new drive train

Thanks for the explanation, it sounds like we're on the same path. As soon as I move the backup wires to the shifter I will cut off the remaining wire (ground, I believe) and everything will be inside.

Thanks

Dave
