No hole in tank, just a rubber seal gone. But tanks have been out, fuel lines and clamps replaced.

All good

I'll bet the outlet feed pipe from the bottom of the tank doesn't even rust in Australia!

I've changed a few of them on Series I's in the UK that were less than three years old.

Hi Graham, No rust anywhere. Tank internals are clean, all bolts, pipes are good. Had to replace rubber seal on drain plug holder, it was as hard as plastic and split.
Was only getting fuel drippng(2-3 drips a day) off drain plug, but only when tank was over 1/4 full so I assumed I had a rust hole up the side of the tank, but I think it was just pressure pushing fuel out when I had more volume in tank.
Went through full system, found brand new pumps and filters. I replaced all rubber fuel line and clamps while I was in there. Now at least, both tanks have been removed and everything checked for leaks.

Not a location you want a fuel leak, even if it is only 2-3 drips a day.

I used to wonder if the fuel system designers ever talked to the exhaust system designers on the Series I project.

Tail pipes gave me the only grief in the whole operation, two of the screws to remove the tank covers (lower rear gaurds) are behind the tail pipes. Previous owner has welded pipes to muflers, rather than screw them on. No idea how he got it all back together, that's a problem for later when I need to do exhaust work
I Cut the tops off phillips head screws to remove panels then replaced them with hex head bolts.
Hopefully tanks won't need removing for a long while . Petrol was cheap today so I filled both tanks when I finished and no leaks so far.
Scary when you say $1.38 per litre is cheap (has been around $1.60 lately). When I moved to Australia in 1988 petrol was around 55 cent per litre compared to close to $1/ltr in NZ. So I went and bought a Ford Coupe with 351 V8.
