Default Is the gasket really necessary for the XJ6 Ignition Coil?

Is the gasket for the spark plug's Ignition Coil for my XJ6 really necessary? If so, what is the function of the gasket? Thank you.

(Note: the *********** wants $15 per piece of gasket - yep, per piece - which is about 75 mm diameter, 1mm thick.)

Bad form jf, if you want free advice from anyone around here, especially our very valuable Dealer Techs do not call them thieves. They are most certainly not!

Thanks Translator for your free advice.

Being an owner of two Jaguars (1996 and 2001) both bought brand new from two Dealerships, I have had my fair share of disappointments dealing with the people I bought from. Both Jags are still with me. Love them.

Frankly, I do not know how to call a spade a rake.

Being the first time posting in this forum, I thought that everybody here should be a Jaguar owner or enthusiast who should not take offense to being referred to as *********** unless he/she is guilty of being so.

I expect to receive some input from a genuine Jaguar owner or enthusiast concerning my post. Obviously I have erred in my expectations.

If I need any advice from somebody related to the Jaguar business, I would have picked up the phone and called my "Service Advisors" at Jaguar.

Btw, I have already resolved the gasket subject in my post.

In a word NO, unless you constantly wash the engine, or leave the bonnet up for the rain to do the same.

The gasket supposedly stop external moisture getting down the plug hole. mine has none, and at their price never will, and I am just tooooooo old and lazy to make my own.

Frankly, it appears that you don't know how to get your point across with insulting people who otherwise would be only too happy to help you. If you consider that to be a virtue go ahead and pat yourself on the back!

Being the first time posting in this forum, I thought that everybody here should be a Jaguar owner or enthusiast

Last time I looked, we are. Including dealer employees who are Jaguar owners and enthusiasts.

who should not take offense to being referred to as *********** unless he/she is guilty of being so.

Faulty logic. Convenient, but faulty.

Review the archives and you see they are plum full of replies from genuine enthusiasts, including very helpful dealer employees.

Seems to me that what you "expected" is to come into a place, as a newcomer, without knowing who else is in the room, throw out a derisive expression, and, in return, get help.

You erred in the assumption that your remark wouldn't offend other members. Live and learn, I reckon.

If I need any advice from somebody related to the Jaguar business, I would have picked up the phone and called my "Service Advisors" at Jaguar.

Being that this is your first time posting perhaps you should've browsed around a bit and learned the lay of the land. Every on-line forum has a unique mix of people and its own atmosphere. Had you done so you would have easily seen that quite a few dealer employees post here....and then avoided stepping all over yourself. :-)

Cheers
DD

thanks Doug for that, I am not guilty of this statement>>>>>> who should not take offense to being referred to as *********** unless he/she is guilty of being so.<<<that was another slam (2nd post) youre now 2 for 2.
I spend an avg of an hour or more everyday here helping people and trying to overcome those kinds of statements. Its now Sunday and Im already into this forum for over an hour. I provide FREE real life experiance and knowledge to help others and I DO NOT apprieciate these statements anymore than you would about your profession whatever it may be. Why would you want to help someone that just slammed the very job you do and care enough about to help others in his/her free time?
I work for 1 of the largest Jaguar dealerships in the world and Im sorry for your past experiances, next time try to choose your words more carefully and not be insulting...youll always catch more bees with honey than vinegar

I have worked on cars for over 30 years at both VW and Jaguar dealers. I have worked with mechanics that thought Jaguars were junk and I ask why they are here at the dealer and they say that it's a job!!! They are not here on this forum answering question for NO MONEY. Only enthusiasts care enough to join groups of like-minded folks. For every 1 question I ask, I answer 100 but I usually find something I did not know or got curious and looked up info in my tech literature or consulted with some of my tech buddies.
A direct question or an amusing story is preferable to insults!!!

Technically this thread belongs in the newer XJ6 forum if the gasket is for the on-plug coil for the AJ16 engine.

Of course I am.

Also 40+ years of Jaguar ownership, and maintaining totally myself.
Parts manager for Jaguar dealer until I recently retired, and I offer my assistance based on my OWN experiences.

We all mess up, that is called in OZ, as "foot in mouth desease", and I have been guilty of it over the years.

Take was has been said, move on, enjoy your Jag/s, and as said, read some/many post, get a lay of the land, enjoy being here, HELL, lifes toooooooo short, and there are many, many Jags out there I have yet to own/drive.

Lightbulb let me tell you..

i had this spluttering for a while and couldn't work out what it was. someone suggested checking for champion plugs and not NGKs which can sometimes cause problems with the coils, so i thought i'd whip out the plugs and see.

i found the front plug had all brown rusty stains on it and was damp, and it had no gasket on it, whereas all the other cylinders did and they were all dry. so i took all the plugs out, cleaned them up and put them back in a different order, to rotate them, and the car has never run so smooth.

so yes, you need coil gaskets!

Hey fellas . . .
My "Thanks" posted to each of a great bunch of Techs on whom we rely.
Oh . . . and then, there's me mate Grant (Hehehe) . . . the Wizard of Oz!
Exceptional bloke, but really terrible drinker. Dribbles a lot, but very friendly!
Yep . . . "foot and mouth disease?" Been guilty of that myself . . .
I agree that life is too short for harsh words.

I love Grant's line about time better spent seeking out Jags we'd love to own. Spent past 2 years looking for an immaculate late model XJR - preferably in BRG, tinted glass and sportz exhaust. Saw plenty that were average to well worn. Gave up. Bought immaculate SIII XJ6 instead; then a similarly aged "pre HE" XJ-S. Now guess what has turned up? BRG; 1 owner; immaculate too . . . Oops; no more money!!!

Yes; life is too short . . .
Cheers and best wishes to all,

Ken

I'll just ditto Doug's detailed analysis. Not much if anything I could add.

I do have two tales!

1. Lumping my S3 took me deep into unknown territory. With a lot of help, it finaly passed CA's rigourus SMOG inspection. A very smart tech resolved two mysteries.
A.. Nonfunctioing EGR. After market harness had one sire not seated in the connector.
B. Unresponsive O2 sensor on one bank. Same after market harness had two wires reversed in the connector.

Not cheap? Or was it? depends on how one looks at it.

2. I made a business call in my newly acquired S3. A major drive line rebuild shop.
The owner admired my car. he told me that before this adventure, he had an independent garage. One of hos customers had a similar car. "It spent a lot of time at my shop"!! My response, "a bit of an annuity?" "yup, quite welcome".

A gentle jab, yes, but definitely in good humor.....

Still don't get the gasket thing, but, oh well.....
