I removed the distributor cap find this unplugged yellow wire.
?1 Any idea as to what it is?
If you follow the yellow wire it goes to the black box to the left.

the black box to the left of distributor would be the Ignition Module.

From the pic I can't quite figure out what's been done to the wiring.

The wires go to the "pickup coil" and, before someone changed the wires, it looked like this:

On second look it appears the the yellow wire in spliced onto the pink-ish wire using that crimp-on terminal as a joiner. It's probably just whatever the guy had on had to joining the wires.

How does the yellow wire exit the distributor?

The brown wire looks, appropriately, like it goes to the 'pass thru' connector in the body of the distributor.

How would one ever get the cap seated if that yellow wire does not pass thru the pass thru plug?

That's what I'm wondering.

"Sumthin' ain't right"

Maybe someone filed a little notch in the cap for the wire to pass through.

Worth investigating and fixing, IMO

the cap was not notched. the yellow wire was just sandwiched between the cap and the metal housing rim. i installed a new rotor and cap today following the same method but i can't start the car until i install the alternator, compressor, drier and expansion valve. like i said, it ran good during the 400 miles i put on it since acquiring it 2 months ago. i'm just doing a whole bunch of routine maintenance. i hope to start it by the end of next week.

Like Doug says, GAH! Take that wire, cut it at the Ignition module and pass it thru the rubber plug as it should be. Re-attach it at the Module. Something bad will eventually happen otherwise.

I'm constantly Astonished at some of the Bodge Jobs I see, like the one above, where people seem completely unable to THINK!!

WOW!!

I'm surprised the rotor could still work with the cap being tilted that much. It would certainly be a problem on my car!

In my decades of working on cars I've done some repairs that, well, I'm not exactly proud of. I've bodged a few things or taken a few few shortcuts. But, jeeeez, some things are just beyond the pale.
