Default Ignition Timing

I cannot find the correct ignition timing when I search this forum, so looking for some advice. 1975 XJ6C, 4.2L, T/Stromberg 175's, Fireball XR700 electronic points, standard distributor with vacuum advance, all emissions equipment removed. Currently it's timed at 7d at idle by the timing light. Haven't run it on the road for the pinging sound.

Any ideas as to where the timing should be?

I always set all mine at 10BTDC, STATIC, and then crank the advance as I drive time it, and thats it,

Never bothered with specs, or the timing light.

You will know when that engine hits the timing sweet spot.

That is pretty much I and other old tech guys have done it. for years. Spec's are a "safe" factory compromise for many variables.

Grant';s method tunes to those conditions.

Could Grant put together a "How To" outline as just how to set the static timing and then doing the fine tuning adjustments on the run. I think this would be a very beneficial article for the ones of us that want to do it but don't have the confidence without clear guidance. How about it Grant? My car is an 85 XJ6 SIII.

Will do.

Working tomorrow, and bed time now, but will do over this weekend.

Here ya go.

Black beast required a little TLC first up, but all good now.

Thank you Grant. The first thing I did was print it out for the workshop file. I'll give it a try tomorrow (Canada Day holiday) and disturb the neighbours!
