The collet is there and looks good. Everything looks ok.
I drive by Aaron Goldman’s “Classic & Prestige” jag Indy shop most days so I will drop in this week and pick his brain.

tried both ways, one way nut and lock nut fit on steering wheel. Other way you can do nut up tight but no room for lock nut on thread. So I assume It is right.
But you know what they say about assume. Makes an “***” out of “u” & “me”.

Just mentioned this to Greg, among other things.

He remembers seeing a video on that, and that knurled wheel thingy #13, clamps on #8 to lock the shaft.

The guy removed the wheel, then that circlip and found one of the collets inside that part that were out of whack. Not the wheel collets, there are more inside that #8. He said it was a long while ago when he saw it, but the guy had it sorted in minutes.

DONE AND SOLVED. Two of my favorite words.

The programme was Wheeler Dealers doing up a Jaguar XJ Series II Coupe. As Grant sid, it was pretty obvious when he got in there how the two parts locked together. I think on one the tapered bit was worn and it was a simple matter to get or fabricate another and job done.

Thanks Greg, had a look today. My thinking is the taper in the top of the new steering column looks a fair bit more worn than the taper in the old column. If I put the lock nut in the old column it locks up.

I have done a bodgy job to get it locking up for now. But Miss Fireball is resuming daily driver duties tomorrow. 155 km a day to get to work and back. I have been riding most days the last 5 weeks (and taking jeep 1 or 2 days a week)but giving the old girl a good run this week to make sure problem is solved.

Moved up from the shed to the garage, expecting a few wet days so had to get her into the house so no chance of getting stuck in a wet back yard.

New Maxxis tyres on the S3 rims. Will be nice to see how they feel, only did 3 km on them since fitting.
