No Reverse
I hope someone can help me, I have a 81 xj6 with a Automatic trans. The car has always been serviced regualry, I purchased the car from a doctor, who purchased the car new. It has 80,000 original miles, and in very nice condition. The transmission started not shifting to the next gear unless I took my foot off the throttle, at which point it would shift. Then one day I go to drive it and it has no reverse, not the slightest movement at all. I removed trans. pan drained the NON burned oil, cleaned the filter. Inspected oil for any metal shavings, none to be found. Adjusted shift linkage, reinstalled filter an pan, filled with new transmission fluid. Again no reverse, inspected vaccum and all other lines, everything looks good. Can anyone direct me of what the problem might be or where I could trouble shoot this further. Thank you skipperrick wa. state

The Borg Warner Model 65/66 was barely enough trans for the heavy Jaguar. The only simple thing that you can do that MAY prolong the gearbox life is to adjust the 2 bands to take up the slack from the worn bands. I used to do this alot when I worked on them everyday when they were popular cars.
There is a band adjuster on each side of the gearbox.
Loosen the stop nut on the allen adjusting stud and tighten the stud to 5 in/lbs. Unscrew it 3/4 turn and lock the pal nut. I think that is the correct procedure but it has been 15 or 20 years since I have done this on a regular basis.
I remember there was a drum that would be extremely worn and scored when the gearbox was torn down for repair.
I used to remove the tailshaft housing to free up the valves in the governor for upshifting faults.
Try adjusting the bands first.
