I am certainly no transmission expert but I had a Dodge truck back in the 90's that did that and it was the tranmission pump. Same symptoms.

The Borg Warner Model 65/66 was barely enough trans for the heavy Jaguar. The only simple thing that you can do that MAY prolong the gearbox life is to adjust the 2 bands to take up the slack from the worn bands. I used to do this alot when I worked on them everyday when they were popular cars.

There is a band adjuster on each side of the gearbox.

Loosen the stop nut on the allen adjusting stud and tighten the stud to 5 in/lbs. Unscrew it 3/4 turn and lock the pal nut. I think that is the correct procedure but it has been 15 or 20 years since I have done this on a regular basis.

I remember there was a drum that would be extremely worn and scored when the gearbox was torn down for repair.

I used to remove the tailshaft housing to free up the valves in the governor for upshifting faults.

Try adjusting the bands first.
