I bought a brand new Bosch GT40R, I was under the assumption these were the ballast variant?

I'll give what you've recommended a shot though.

They are, well done.

That eliminates many things to me.

1) Wiring appears OK
2) Ballast is giving the correct "out" reading.

Your car may not have the Ballast By-pass for start, and that will give that weak spark on crank you have found. I will write that up for you, between sips of Necta, of course, and post back later.

Thanks mate, pretty easy to follow.

Do you know how many wires should be hanging off the ignition coil from factory?

Car has not previously had this issue and used to start, there is a immobiliser in the mix, and I'm concerned this may be part of the problem. Have tried to find a basic wiring diagram for the ignition system but haven't had much luck.

Pleasure.

Points Ignition had 3 wires, and that memory.

1) Ign +ve on the +ve post. Colour no idea.
2) Distributor Contact Points Earth, on the -ve post. Colour no idea.
3) White with Spiral Plate coloured for the tacho, on the coil -ve post.

IF the car had that ballast system, there would be a 4th wire on the coil +ve post.

The OPUS system, dont remember. It will be in the scribes in the shed somewhere.

If you want the colours, let me know, I will go searching over the weekend, tomorrow is a busy day for us.

Yep that's in line with the current wiring then. Last time I fired it up and tried to crank it, the ballast started smoking. Will run through all this over the weekend most likely.

Thought I'd come back around on this. With COVID and all, motivation was pretty flat but I got myself into the garage on the weekend.

Replaced the battery, ignition coil and vacuum hoses to the carbs and cranked it with a spark tester in play. Great, good strong spark.

Car cranked and still wouldn't start.

My lack of knowledge on SU's comes into play here. So I started playing with the (levers?) that face towards each other on each carb that connect to the bottom of the carb jet assembly. As soon as I opened them up, bam car runs.

So going to do some reading on these to figure out where I've gone wrong, any tips would be appreciated.

There is a book, from SU Midel, in Caringbah???, and that was 20 years ago. They are THE SU people, and the book is the bible for these carbs and us.

I am assuming from your lever description, you have HS8 SU units, SWEET and SIMPLE carbs.

Basically you have lowered the jets, and that is the same as a choke on a normal carb, and away it went, priceless.

I definitely owe you a few beers. Not sure where my head was at, but when I put everything back in I left the choke out.

I've refitted the cross bar that links to the two levers for the choke, but I'm missing the fitting that links that bar to the choke pull. Can't seem to find anything amongst the bits and pieces that came off that fits the bill either. Any idea what it looks like?

This will fit the bill I think. http://sucarb.co.uk/linkage-parts/hs...ction-kit.html

HAHAHA, you are NOT alone.

That is the deal. Ask at Lakemba, they moved, they would have that in stock I reckon.
