Default oil gauge reading off scale

Hi replacing the oil gauge in my series 2 as the one there was from a 420 and it didnt really work.

Got a good second hand (i believe) got it plugged in and turn the ignition on and the gauge just slowly runs to max plus to the right.

Start the engine no change.

Looks like the wiring is connected right, at sender and the gauge, and the oil pressure warning switch , gauge has two green connected to one side, and white brown to the other. It did have a black earth connected to the bracket at the back not sure what thats for ! .

Any ideas folks?

Only thing that springs to mind is that if the original gauge unit was not correct , then it may have an oil pressure sender that was also not correct to match. You may just have a mismatch.

When you pull the wire of the sender does the gauge go back to zero? just to rule out a wiring fault, as its behaving like the sender lead is earthed.

I have a couple of used units if you cannot find a new one. I can test them before sending.

There are 60 psi senders and 100 psi senders, so you need to match them to the gauge.

Either the sending unit or the wire coming off it is shorted to ground

I got a new sender....gauge still going off scale ignition on. The was a black wire which was attached to the back of the gauge...touched that on the gauge, there was a spark...now none of the gaged work at all, temp battery charge whatever...hmmmmm . The car does start though

Blew a fuse ok...too many random wires going nowhere on this car!!! So with new sender yes gauge is going off scale ignition on....and if i earth the wire to the sender ignition on same thing happens. Ran an independent wire from sender to gauge yep zips off the scale phew

Sounds like its acting more like an oil pressure switch than a sensor that drives a guage. If it was switching an oil pressure light this is what you would expect , low resistance with engine not running and ignition on, so your oil light comes on. Then high resistance/open circuit with the engine running so the light goes out.

If you have a multi meter you could check what the sensor is doing in both cases.

I'm guessing you have a series 1 xj6 buy your car list?.....the wiring should be from sender> Black/ brown stripe to oil press/warning light...oil press/send White/brown trace to gauge, green powers the dash all instruments...if you have a different setup let me know what you have & i'll post the info or message me, i'm in Sydney

instead of an edit>> if you have the S1 printed circuit dash, the black is terminal 3 for the dash lights earth,...green is for terminal 7 from fuse #1...oil press/ sender white/brown is terminal 6

Comment 11 of the link above and the attached 'Gentleman's guides' explain how the gauge and sender work and how to test and calibrate them. It does sound as if your sender is actually a switch for a warning light.

Yes, series two. Looks like black brown to warning light, white brown to gauge and down to the sender, two green wires to gauge.
