Rear Right Tyre rubbing inner guard Series 2
Hi Jagamites, So I put new superlite wheels and tyres on my '74 series 2. They're the same rolling radius as factory but a little wider with allegedly correct offset for Jags. When first fitted the left rear was fine but the right was hard up against the lip.
I rolled the lip and removed four shims as the camber was wrong anyway, all giving me correct camber and enough clearance so it was drivable but on undulations and left cornering the tyre still rubs.
The previous owner had rebuilt the rear so cage was out and all new components refitted. Is it possible he reinstalled the cage incorrectly, ie not correctly aligned and to one side?
I should mention I decided on this wheel and tyre combo because I know of an identical car with the same wheels and tyres and there is no issue with rubbing. Thanks!
Edit, ride height is factory specs.

OOPS.
Cradle alignment, for want of a phrase, is governed by the 4 "V" mounts, which are NOT adjustable. The thing sits in and thats it.
Dodgy "V" mounts, always a PITA for me, hence Metalastick OE ONLY in all my cars.
The trailing arms have a small fore and aft control, but not sideways that I am aware.
Hub (AKA Wheel) bearings, yeh nah, there would be horrible noises if they are worn, and since they are HUGE suckers, and I have never had any fail, so never been inside that unit.
BUT
I have never fitted alternative wheels or tyres, so that is a Dark Zone for me.
My suggestion would be to take the load off that wheel, grab it firmly, and see if you can get ANY in and out movement. That could be the issue, and the components at play there are:
Uni Joints
Output shaft bearings
Outer hub bearings.
Half shaft Castellated nut NOT done up tight enough.
I also understand its been out and "rebuilt", OK, but things do go bang in the night, and maybe something is off song in that cradle.

Maybe take some measurements on the inside of rear fenders ie internal measurements. Wheels off, obviously.
The car my have taken a hit (sideswipe?) at some stage and not repaired correctly.
I'm with Grant - unlikely the IRS cage is off-centre.

There's also absolutely no evidence of any accidents but at the time Pressed Steel Company were known for their 'near enough' pressings and Jaguar didn't seem to care. I'll probably just roll the guard a little more and live with it. Will update if I find anything.
I'll have it on a hoist in a week so I'll do as you suggest. Be interesting to do. Never know what I'll find.
Measure, as stated before. Add the wheel off set. All four for comparison and some inkling of manufacture tolerances/
And, If jaguar is loose on tolerance, measure wheel well clearance, left to right.
Then, add in the wild card. Stacked tolerances. Wheel to well stack.
It seems that unless you can swap wheels on the car to avoid the tolerance stack, you are stuck. Roll the lip some more. Way back when another use for a baseball bat !!!

You been looking down my cyber space line.
I am doing that "book" and am at 400 pages so far, then remember something else, BUGGA.
My Managing director claims I clearly have mor in the brain than I thought, probably keep her for just that alone.
Its been 12 months, but I am getting to it every night. Much harder than I thought.
I scribbled this years ago, after 54 operations, and flicked the wheelchair for a walking stick.
