Default replacing shift link cable on a series 3

Sorry if there is a thread on this already, but I couldn't find one.

Yesterday the shift lever went loose in my hand. It's stuck in drive, I managed to get home and then cut the engine on the driveway - Didn't know what else to do.

The shifter linkage cable has snapped at the top end where it attaches to the lever. Is it possible to change the cable from inside the car? - by removing more interior parts, or is it and job that required access to underneath the car?

I've seen an article that seems to imply it can be done from within, but can't find any pictures or anything online.

If you pull away the carpet from the transmission tunnel there is a screwed-on 'door' that would give some access to the side of the transmission. You might be able to undo cable from the transmission via this portal. However, there's also the cable anchor point to contend with. As I recall this is well aft of the access hole in the transmission tunnel.

I think you'll have to get under the car.

But I'm on my first cuppa coffee. Let's hear what others have to say.

Cheers

You'll need to get under the car to do it...
I have those on hand, but shipping charges from the US may make it better for you to source from the UK...

Yup!

Mine parted in my drive way while undergoing it's transplant. Top side done via opening the console. Not a big thing. My helper was skilled in transmissions ands cable replacements. More in other critters, but
it transcended. Wr used the old cable as a way to pull the new into place. Clear evidence existed of a prior replacement.

My parts source claimed their version was a newer and tougher design.

Mine parted at the housing swedge. My replacement was a bit long.
The internal part that is. We cut it to size with a mini tubing cutter.

Good luck.

Is it at all possible to manipulate the linkage directly from the inside of the car, just to get it out/into gear to move it on my driveway?

Possibly, if there's enough of a 'nub' at the end to grasp with pliers. Obviously the console 'ski slope' panel must be removed first. If you need directions for that just shout back

So another question is why did this happen? I would urge you to check the ground strap from the starter to the body of the car and then ultimately to the battery. When your ground strap goes bad the engine grounds through the shifti cable and the shifter cable gets hot and melts and then it becomes difficult to shift and then the cable can break

Too true.

Throttle cables often suffer the same fate.

My guess is that the Swaged end has parted, and the housing and cable move together and not move the lever on the side of the transmission.
1. You might be able to get it into gear using the port on the side of the tunnel. LH. But, starting the engine, in gear becomes an issue.

2. Same for down under.

All said and done, the temporary is so close to the final, that I'd opt for an in situ replacement.
