Default Stake Down Question

I’m going to install stake downs on the exhaust side as a precaution. Am I correct in assuming you only need one per tappet follower? I.e. you only need 180 degree coverage rather than 360 degrees per follower?

Also should the stake down be installed up, down left or right? I’ve seen them up and down.

Thanks.

There are 3 holdowns for 6 exhaust tappet guides. They only hold an edge and that is all that is needed.
I have only used them on the exhaust side and the plates are normally installed on the lower part of the tapper valley.

Thanks Bob. Jose I don’t want to get into a fracas. I understand this issue is almost as fraught as the leaper/no leaper debate and I do worry about the mechanic making a mistake in the installation. But should I just be attentive to a change in noise and if so do it then? I don’t want to be pennywise and pound foolish here but if it’s done I don’t have to worry about it no?

if you don't hear a rattling noise coming from the exhaust side of the cylinder head, your engine is one of the few engines that does not need tha fix.

There's an argument to be made that if a tappet guide problem was gonna occur, it would've already occurred in the last 31 years.

Installing a stake down is like insurance.

As long as your tech doesn’t mis-drill the holes, penetrate the block or get filings in the engine while doing it . . . .

That's not good. I hope that's not your current experience!
