Default Sunroof Seal Options

1982 XJ6.

Is URO the only sunroof seal available? Unless they have improved their quality or are the only ones offering this seal, I have found going OEM is best when it is related to rubber seals. Can't seem to find an original OEM sunroof seal through my Google searching. Any suggestions?

Personally I wouldn't even bother searching for the OEM seal. I bought one 20 years ago....from Jaguar, in Jaguar packaging.....and it didn't fit as well as the original. For lack of a better word it wasn't "poofy" enough.

URO might be your only choice.

Cheers

I ordered one from SNG Barratt which is the same as URO, the seal is too big and too thick. I had to cut about 2" inches, then join the two halves to make it tight enough , a total p.i.t.a. especially at the rear corners

I don't know why this problem has not been corrected, we might have to go to Japan or China who would surely manufacture a correct seal.

Agreed, I have had fitment issues with URO door seals on a Mercedes. Not encouraging when an OEM seal doesn't fit well. One thing with OEM Mercedes rubber is it is high quality, and the fitment is perfect, though you do pay a premium. I need to figure out something as the seal on my sunroof is cracker and leaking. I wish more people opted for no sunroof back in the day.

The furflex type seal is NOT to prevent the ingress of WATER, just the 'wind-noise' and to slow the water leak so the drain channels can divert to the tubes for drainage.
If you want a 'water-tight' seal from the roof panel, I suggest TIG welding a water-tight repair.

I watched a video on YouTube on how to replace it and the seal he used was all rubber. Even a URO seal may be better than my cracked one with holes in it. This and making sure my drains are clear.

there is no "furflex" seal for the sunroof panel, furflex is only used in door jambs. The sunroof seal is a hollow rubber seal which is formed/molded a certain way.

I think we are being sold XJ40 seals which might be for a larger panel but of similar design.

What I did was to cut and force-stretch the seal around the two rear corners, because they came too thick. It was only then that the panel fell in place when closing the sunroof.

Jose, do you recall the part number of your seal?

If the URO seal I ordered off Ebay requires a lot of modifying, then it isn't designed for the XJ6 as advertised and I will ask to return it and try my luck with BCC2421 from SNG and hopefully I will have good luck as did LT1 Jaguar.

The asterisk is often used by vendors to indicate an aftermarket part.

The part number progression for the seal is JLM849, then BBC2421, then BCC2421.

A part number change is often seen when a design change or vendor change takes place. Maybe, just maybe, if a person could find a JLM849 is would be a proper fit. It would also be so old that might not be usable.

Cheers

Im going to attempt using either a Porsche 911 or VW seal used on a bug. Theyre cheap enough to experiment with.

The URO seal I bought seems to be a better quality than the Mercedes door seals I got some years ago. I did read somewhere that someone said they have upped their quality. I will keep everyone posted on the fitment when it comes time to removes and replace the seal.

@MSGGrunt Hello, I was wondering if you tried installing the URO sunroof seal and if so what your experience was? I know it can be fussy to get the sunroof panel to close and sit properly after removing it. I'm getting started on replacing the headliner on my '87 S3 and debating on whether to replace the seal while I have the sunroof panel out. It's not in bad shape as far as I can tell before removing the panel. I'm not experiencing any issues with it, so I'm tempted to leave the original seal alone after reading up on the some of the issues with fitment of the aftermarket seals.

I replaced one on an '84 S3 maybe 10 years ago and I feel like I was able to get an OEM seal back then. It did take a lot of work to get the panel to close and sit right afterwards though.
