two question marks:
1) See picture below: it looks like two of the “mounts” on the irs have separated. I assume I should replace these…what is the risk of driving in the meantime? Can they be replaced without dropping the whole irs? Looks like I could maybe jack up the rear end and slide new ones in.
2) see attached video. this spring that supports the drive shaft seems really loose. Should it be that loose? If not, what part should I replace?
That Vee-mount doesn't look good. Not safe to drive, IMO. You should be able to just lower the IRS a bit and replace the mounts. Some of the aftermarket replacements are low-grade. I'd use OEM mounts. or....somebody out there (SNG?) is apparently selling a upgraded aftermarket type that is supposed to be good. Let's hear what other have to say
The transmissions do bounce on these cars but that's look excessive. The inner "cotton spool" bush...which would limit the movement.... is likely shot. I replace the bush and the two rubber mounting blocks as well....as they're almost certainly oil soaked, gushy, and sagging. Part numbers CAC3227 and C32461
When disassembly the mount assembly pay close attention to how everything goes !
It is perfectly possible to replace the rear V-mounts, and I've done it myself. The photos show the normal failure mode known to Jaguar owners and mechanics since the IRS design came out in the 60s ! As Doug says, make sure you replace with known good parts, there is a lot of junk now in the classic car spares market.
I also replaced the rubber bush in the transmission mount and don't remember anything complicated when doing so.

Thanks! Do you happen to remember what brand of V mounts you went with? URO appears to be the most available…I called SNG as they had three options, and the representative said he suspects they are all made by the same manufacturer lol
For the transmission mount, will I need to Jack up the transmission, or will it more or less hang there while I make the replacements?
You MUST try to source genuine Metalastic brand rubber parts for the car, wherever and whenever a rubber part is being renewed. They are expensive but anything else fails very quickly, as in a few weeks or months..
This is the part: https://www.jagspares.co.uk/product/...xjs%2c/cbc5737
Ring them up in the UK and ask for Jack Weston. he may well have genuine Metalastic, but not in a Jaguar box much cheaper.

Label engineering. That's one of the challenges in buying parts.

You'll need a floor jack...or some other way...to support the transmission.
Thank you all for the information and advice! Are either of these procedures (transmission mount or V-mount) covered in the service manual? I've looked through what I feel are relevant sections but haven't seen anything. If not, I think I have enough information to wing it
Finished the V-mounts! Second side went a lot faster than the first - quite an interesting setup, but not too difficult once you figure it out. Was good that I did it - one V totally separated while I was removing them, and another was noticeably cracked.
Got the Transmission mount apart...was a bit tricky, particularly the nuts that go into the transmission pan bolts, and I think I should have done the center nut last, but it worked out.
I do not see any sign of an original transmission buffer, so whether it was removed by a PO or disintegrated in service I know not, but likely the primary cause of my bouncy transmission.
I took a chance on transmission mounts from Moss motors...they were not labeled with a brand so I don't know manufacturer, but part number was correct and THE HOLES DON'T EVEN LINE UP CORRECTLY - ARRRGGGHHH! Hoped I would be safe ordering from Moss, but no dice. I'll try to find and order some Jaguar brand and hope they arrive soon, and fit.
Wasn't able to find genuine Jaguar transmission mounts from the usual sources, so I'm trying a direct order through the dealer. Should arrive in a couple days and will see how they look.
Anyone have experience with NOS on these? I generally stay from NOS rubber parts because aged rubbed just ain't great, but curious if anyone has experience with this particular application.

New old-stock rubber parts are usually OK if they've not been exposed to UV light. This is what damages so much organic material.
Closing this thread out, as I finished the Transmission mount last night. Wow - the old pieces were really bouncing around bad. New install and everything seems pretty tight. Ended up sourcing the mounts from a Jaguar dealership (imagine that lol). Looks like they are MTG Rubber. At least they fit correctly, unlike the aftermarkets I got the first time!
