Default Water Pump Leak

Hello,
I have a 1991 XJ6 that is leaking coolant from somewhere around the water pump, i can't quite locate the leak. The closest i can get is that it is dripping off the pulley that is connected to the water pump. It only leaks when running, hot or cold. If anyone has any resources or an idea of what could be leaking that would be awesome!

Coolant dripping from the pulley is the Classic symptom water pump failure whether running or not.
The seal has gone allowing coolant to escape around the shaft and drip off the pulley.
Cure: New water pump.

Welcome to the forums, when you get a moment please post an intro in the new member area.

Your water pump will have a weep hole on the underside just behind the pulley. They start dripping out of here when the seal has failed. As Elinor said, replace the water pump.
You can see it dripping with a small mirror and torch.

Thank you for the response, I've made an appointment to get the water pump replaced. I also have a hose coming right off the water pump that is swollen a little bit, should i replace this myself before i bring it to the mechanic or just wait and get them to do it? I won't be driving the car except to the mechanic. Thanks!

If your having the water pump replaced by a mechanic you may as well let them do it as they'll be in there anyway and it will be warranted.

Mathew,

Your 1991 XJ6 will be an XJ40 and not an XJ6 Series III.

In this instance the symptoms and solution will be similar but please post future technical questions in the relevant forum:

"XJ6" is a marketing designation, used for decades, on significantly different cars.

To segregate the cars for discussion the engineering designation or platform designation...such as "XJ40".... is often used. The XJ6 name was also used on the "X300" platform....and an and even more modern one..."X350" perhaps? Not sure.

Anyway, a 1991 XJ6 can only be an "XJ40"

This all began in 1986-87 when the older Series III XJ6 was being built concurrently with the newer and very different "XJ6". Using the engineering designation ..."XJ40"....was an easy way to differentiate between the two

Cheers

That makes much more sense now and will help a lot with searching for diagnostics etc.

Thanks!

Get a replacement water pump from rockauto to fit your engine #.

In every "modern: critter, a leaking, weeping or even squeaking WP is fixed only by a new or rebuilt one

Way, way, back when, a leaker could be fixed with "water pump pliers" to tighten the gland nut. The tool survives, a plumber's favorite.

Guess I can't just put a little permatex in the weep port hole, eh? I thought it was the gasket, initially.

This is a very easy part to swap. I'll get a re-manufactured one from Terry's and in an hour or two be back in business.

Hi everyone,

I've finally taken the courage to DIY -- replacing the thermostat, radiator, and water pump. Kinda nerve-wracking, but you know what? This pandemic made me do it!

I was wondering if my Jaguarista seniors can help me out: can someone pls explain the steps on replacing the water pump? I think I can do the thermostat and the radiator somehow. But the water pump?

instructions would be very nice. And yes, pictures are cool too.

thanks, all!

If you can find the Wheeler Dealers TV episode where they worked on a Jaguar XJ6 coupe it might help. They dealt with a failing bearing in the water pump.
it is not on YouTube but maybe somewhere else?
