Default Windshield Wiper Mechanism

I can't for the life of me figure out how to remove the two items shown by the arrows. Getting the car ready to paint and would love to remove them. Any help appreciated. Thanks, Bill

first remove the wiper motor pulling the cable with it. then remove the dash cap. Then remove the nuts and spacers and waterproof washer on the outside. Then pull the cable racks out from the inside.

Windshield wiper motor already out. Dash cap easy to remove. I'll try that. Many thanks.

you welcome. On reassembly, grease the racks and cable with non-hardening grease. Same idea with the sunroof motor rack.

Do I loosen the two bolts on each mechanism and separate the tubes from them?

yes, two 5/16 nuts on each rack to let the tubes come off. Same as the sunroof motor.

same wiper system used in all Jags since the 1950's. Remove the tubes too and degrease them, they're probably clogged up with old hardened grease.

Why take them off? Just wrap with masking tape. Then go ahead and paint...

Right you are. The hardened grease made the wipers work harder than they needed to. The drivers side was acPIA to het out, but oit it came. Boy, did I open Pandora's box though. Surface rust under the 2 mechanisms that I have Ospho working on now. And... both of the plenum vacuum plastic boxes are more than crumbled. I had to remove them to get at the rust properly. Don't have a parts yatd around here so I 'll have to acquire them somehow. I do have a new dash I've been waiting to put in. Maybe now is the time.

Wrap them with tape was an option, but couldn't get a good block sanding up there. Besides, it all worked out for the best. See above post.

contact David at Everyday XJ and he'll send you two good used ones. Those are the Windshield Defrost plenums.

what year is the car? I would also replace the ovaled outside neoprene washers under the angled spacers with new ones, I think you can get those from SNG Barrat USA store.

SNG Barratt has them "no longer available". Are they oval washers or round? Any suggestions?

Might have to make my own from a neoprene sheet. Gotta figure out how thick a sheet to buy first.

Just found a piece of scrape sheet rubber (neoprene?) 1/8" thick that would make perfect washers. And easy to cut with an Xacto knife. I'll use the angled outside piece as a template. I assume one washer goes on the inside and one on the outside? They were both missing when I took them out of the car. Would explain the surface rust under the dash. Ospho did a great job overnight. Love that stuff.

I think 1/16 or thinner. Also only one per rack, the one on the outside of the cowl.1/8 might be too thick. Not sure. The trick is the center hole, it should be super tight and should fit like a gearshift boot, so you cut the outside oval last after the gasket has been stretched over the shaft housing.
