In my recently purchased Series 2 XJ12, the first issue I have come accross is the fuel delivery system in the boot/trunk. It appears that someone has tried o fix a problem without really knowing what they were doing. They have also added an electric antenna into the mix.
I would love some advice on what parts I will need and any diagrams to get this back to how it should be..
Where do I start?
What a mess.....
It looks like the left hand tank has been bypassed for some reason..
I have 5 crates of Jaguar books, sketches and other such stuff.
I know the book, it is Green covered, with a Yellow stripe across it. I will look through the other crates tomorrow, and post back so I can keep my promise.

That's ok Grant. I'm in no hurry. Got plenty of time to get this old girl back on the road.
It is the one with 2 fuel pumps, which I remember as the S3 6 cylinder real late models, had one a long time ago, so maybe that is where the drawings are from.
I have done a hand drawing of the one that "should be in your car, and that is memory from the '76 XJ12 we owned for a loooooong time, and I changed that mongrel 3 way valve a few times, as it always weeped fuel enough to cause odours.
I have attached that drawing here. The system resto you will need to do will be a tad complicated, and I think emails direct from me to you will free up this forum. YOU MUST post the end result eventually as the archives only benefit from such posts.
let me know your email via a Private Message, and we can start the process. It will NOT be hard, and there a few options that we can discuss prior to you spending silly money.
The fuel pump system is basically the same for the 6 or 12 if they are both injected.
3 solenoid valves are used to select the supply and return tanks.
The antenna motor IS located in the same area as the fuel pump.
The fuel pump is NOT supposed to have a filter to the inlet of the pump.
The mesh filter screens in each tank are the inlet filters.
Hi, I have tried to attach copies from the factory manual for the series 2 injected cars. The earlier cars had the return solenoid valve in the boot whereas the later and S3 cars had the valves under the rear wheel arch.Hope its legible!
It’s good thanks. Ok, I have 3 in the trunk..(many hands did many things to it) only 2 are suppose to be there. I’ll sort it all out.
As far as the fuel tanks are concerned I noticed a third line in the boot that I think is a vent line that connects to the upper part of the tank. It is just behind the liner. (Right tank is missing and I am looking for one) not sure what that line is, I’ll trace it.
trying to locate a good used or NOS tank for this s2 1977 v12 injection
where can I get a factory manual. It’s well written.

Hi, fuel tanks on these cars is starting to become a bit of an issue. Jaguar listed 4 different part numbers for the series 2 v12’s alone and corrosion is certainly a problem of UK cars, plus replacement is not a nice job! I have been looking at getting a custom made single alloy tank to fit in the boot space against the rear bulkhead, as Jaguar did with the xj40.
The additional pipe work you refer to is indeed the vent system, again lots of variations depending on market.
Re the workshop manual, the reference is E190/4, parts catalogue is RTC9089C.
Attached is a photo of what the pipe work should look like, again not great quality, regards Simon
Lucky mine has been kept indoors its entire life. Delivered in Switzerland then went to Florida USA (no salt on the roads) but humid now in Arizona dry desert. Only rust is near the battery and the brake booster. Surface only but…. One tank is missing and the other seems ok with boroscope. I can put any tank in the boot, but this one is worth keeping original. So few originals left. I found a NOS tank (for 1k !) but with sending unit in rear instead of front… so that might have to be cut and welded. I will start to mess with the removal of left tank… and compare. Seems like it has the in out holes together. I need to figure out that vent line on top. I use 110 leaded fuel in it with .4 oz of marvel mystery per gallon. That’s now 50 years from now ? Not sure what will happen to it.
fuel lines plumbing seems almost like mine. They may have had fuel migration due to a bad valve so they added a third one…
