XJ12C - radio/cassette player?
Hi
As I see hope of some day getting my XJC -76 back on the road the search for proper sound system starts.
The 90s CD player has to go.
I want some late 70s/early 80s car stero with cassette player.
Any suggestions?
What were these cars equiped with originally (european market)?
Was 1976 too early for cassette tape in cars?
Did the Jaguars really come with 4 speakers?
I grew up with 1970s/80s SAABs and Volvos. Some later ones had cassette players and 2 speakers instead of only 1.central.

When I was in high school, 1974-76, cassettes car stereos were definitely popular. But the eight track systems remained common and didn't die-off until the early 80s.
The very earliest cassette car stereos came out in '68-'69.
Jaguar sales brochures from the mid-70s (USA market) show an 8-track system as standard fitment. The 1979 brochure, for the early Series III cars, show a cassette system as standard.
Not sure about other markets but suspect wide variances.
And, in those days, dealer-installed or port-installed radios were common.
Series III cars used 4 speakers. Not sure about Series II cars.
Cheers

and DIN chassis radios started around 1985 in Jaguars. Before the DIN chassis (rectangular cutout on face plate), radios had two knobs, one on each side of the centered display, faceplate was cut accordingly.
I have a 1976 Jaguar series 2 XJ6 fitted with a Phillips radio cassette sterio player. It even has its own micophone for recording your commentary as you drive through beautiful countryside, or noting the number plate of fellow drivers as necessary! The manual says it is a 22 RN 712.

I finally found one:
A Philips 22AC860. Probably late 70`s. Works great. Not sure if it manages all 4 speakers. Will try out a bit. Would have to install some fader button somewhere.
I cannot upload pictures to this forum anymore. Always stucks at exactly 90%. Have tried from different browsers Any idea?
