XJ6 Series 3 air pump removal

XJ6 Series 3 air pump removal
I recently bought a nice 1981 XJ6 Series 3. I would like to remove the air pump, which I understand will not cause any problems and get rid of a piece of equipment which can fail(the pump). It appears that the inlet to the air cleaner box will need to be sealed, as will the inlets in the cylinder head. I'd appreciate other owners' thoughts on this before I proceed.
Thank you.
Thank you.

Hi JagXJ6S3,
That Air Pump is easy to remove.
Either loosen the belt tensioner to remove the belt, or just cut the belt if it is giving you grief.
Check it, but there should only be the air pump on the belt.
Remove the plumbing first as it makes more room to get at the air pump mount.
Before you start, have six brass blank screw plugs ready to fill the holes in the head. Don't over tighten as you are screwing into aluminium.
I'm trying to find my notes on the screw size. They were over the counter at any good gas fitting store.
Cheers,
Nigel

I removed it with no ill effects--quite frankly, the thing kept disconnecting anyway. It is on it's own belt. As I recall, the threads on the 6 screw plugs were British Pipe Thread and not American, so I ordered them online. There is another thread on here with the sizing, but of course now I can't find it.

I've removed two from past critters Neither was a Jaguar. On one, I merely cut the rail to free the fittings. Then tapped the centers for Allen screws.
Voila, neat plugs that screwed tight in.
Here it would spoil an expansive part? so, thinking needed.
In my bits shed is one of them. A left over from my conversion. Just the pump, I think. The pulley and fasteners went to a Jag guy that forgot to remove his when he turned in the seized one as a core.

Bringing this thread back from the grave. I pulled my locked up air pump off the engine and removed all hoses and plugged the holes in the head using the plugs from McMaster that Paul suggested above. Everything has gone well so far.
My question for those that have done this mod, the A/C compressor location is connected to the bracket that was supporting the air pump. I'd like to dump that air pump bracket to further clean things up, but would like to know what others have done to anchor the compressor. The current rod in red is used now. Has anyone come up with something that attaches to points shown in green or blue?
Thanks,
Eric

I removed mine to clean it and paint it using a normal open end wrench because I had no special tool. The wrench needs to grab the nuts securely at an almost 90 degree angle, then I used a second wrench to turn the first wrench counter clockwise. The nuts loosened without much hassle. I did use PB Blaster penetrating spray ahead of removal.

Hi Eric,
Did you figure out a solution and can you share to me?
I am fixing a failed A/C clutch on an 87 xj6 4.2 and found that there was no belt tensioner for the A/C Compressor. Perhaps contributed to the clutch failure. I intend to remove the air pump also, and have the belt tensioner for the air pump.
Many thanks!!
