Default XJ6 SIII 1987 coolant and oil?

So i am looking to buy both but was wondering what the consensus is.

The jaguar mechanic near me said 20 - 50 oil Castrol GTX. Would this also include the high mileage synthetic blend one? My clock reads 71k

In terms of coolant. Should you stick to the colour currently in the chamber??

All help and info appreciated!

Castrol 20W50 MINERAL oil. No synthetics, synthetic oil is very thin and leaks like crazy. Old Jaguars do not need any help in that department. Your mechanic is correct.

Prestone coolant in a 60/40 mix is the one I have used since the 1970's and have no problems with it. (60% Prestone mixed with 40% water). If you look at it in terms of Quarts, 6 quarts of Prestone and 4 quarts of water mixed. Some people prefer 50/50. I prefer 60/40.

yes, check the price at Walmart, it is lower by a couple bucks.

same for coolant, cheaper at Walmart. Don't buy the pre-mixed coolant, you don't want to pay for half a gallon of water!!

As to the Oil Filter, that's where you don't want to skimp. Buy a good quality oil filter.

Maybe someone will add their reccomendation about oil filters.

Yes, 20/50 is the usual recommendation. Most drop down to 10/40 is sub-freezing weather is in the forecast.

I think of Castrol as the sentimental favorite. Castrol and Jaguar go together like a hand in a glove. I used to use it exclusively but eventually realized it was making ME feel really good but the engine really didn't care what brand of oil was poured in. Now i use whatever name brand is on sale that day

Synthetics get mixed reviews. Some like 'em, others don't. Synthetics or 'boutique' oils are certainly not required for your old Jag

I agree with Jose on the coolant

I no longer have a favorite but for years I used only the factory oil filters. Nowadays any name brand is OK with me. Presently I'm using Baldwin. Have also used AC Delco, Fram, WIX/Napa (same filters). Used Bosch for a few years. They all seemed OK to me, nothing bad ever happened.

Can't add anything. I like Valvoline, also sold under the CARQUEST brand. but, only because it usually seems to be the best buy. I don't frequent Costco or Walmart.

Yes, the old tech coolant. Prestone or similar is just fine. Agree as to the premix, although it is handy!! I do 50/50,

It's been decades since I lived in anything but a moderate clime. so severe cold conditions are not an issue.

Were I to buy anew hitech car, unlikely, I would consider the synthetics. But, my cars are far from new!!!

Thanks all for the help and info. I didn't get any updates for replies so didn't realize you had all left some haha

@Doug Thanks for the info Doug! Very much appreciated.

I found that (dare i say it) Amazon is cheaper also if you have prime as there is no shipping charge. Got myself some castrol 20 50 and some leatherique to clean up the seats.

I checked the coolant and its yellow. Is it a THING to stick to the same colour or did i miss read somewhere?

yes Chris, the color of the car is milk chocolate brown and the window tint is brown too. One big Hershey's bar!

By the way, I'm not getting reply updates either.

I've seen green, orange, and blue coolant over the years. Not familiar with yellow coolant. It might be one of those 'universal' coolants. Not sure. I wouldn't mix anything else into without knowing for sure what it is. If uncertain, drain and flush the system and refill with old fashion green Prestone.

Prestone coolant is aquamarine green, so I have no idea what the yellow coolant is. did the seller give you any service records?

Why do you want to change it? Better find out what coolant they used, it could be GM coolant, which is fine too.

my girlfriend has a Malibu Maxx which uses a "special" coolant which is yellowy.

Man that car has a Corvette engine in there. If you step on it, the torque makes the car go sideways.

Not so much to change it but in case I need to top up. Always concerned about over heating.

it's called Grosvenor Brown.

Prestone coolant is green, it turns brownish yellow if there is rust inside the system. That is why I use a 60/40 mix.

time to flush the system with Prestone Super Flush and a garden hose. It's a whole day job to drain the system disconnecting hoses, drain bolt, reconnecting, disconnecting and reconnecting again. That is if you don't want to have to do it again for 5 or 6 years.

Agree, that is what nabbed me. Grosvenor Brown. !! Circa 2001, I saw one out front of a dealership that did "different" cars. The candy in the widow was an E tyoe coupe. primrose, flashing wires and an open bonnet showing the elegant DOHC 6.

At the curb, the XJ6. Brown with buckskin interior. Detailed to the max. Back in the corner of my mind, Then, one day, I saw a fellow driving it!! @@#$%%^$$. Snoozed and lost!!

NO!! it was back !

Long story, immensely truncated. Dear departed and I visited. took it for a ride. Done,

It is in my garage/shop. Of all the cars I've owned or driven, up top!!

Carl

it is a strange color. At night it looks black. I looked at the paint mix one time at Sherwin Willams and it has orange in the mix.
I have to repaint it, the Florida weather has ruined the paint but Sanchez is too busy with his XJ40 to take on the job.

I used to put 15W40 in my 1980 XJ6 as it was more freely available and the car was certainly OK on it, good oil pressure etc. Its a long time ago now, but I think Jaguar recommended this as one of the oil grades one could use. Of course with our booming classic car market here in the UK the older type of oils are now much more available, like 20-50.
