A friend of mine has a an 84 series II XJ6 which has been totally restored, the problem we have is the wiper motor was rusted and scrap so we ordered a new one from the UK and it fitted but didn’t give full sweep on the screen. He sourced new one here in Norway but it was exactly the same it only sweeps across half the screen. The car is LHD and the wiper spindles are mounted equidistant in the centre so could park either side, I never saw it as it was before the blades were removed. The blades park on the the left in front of the driver and go to just past top dead centre leaving a lot of the screen untouched.
I have opened the motor to see if its possible to modify it but the crank is as far from the centre of the drive wheel as possible giving maximum throw on this motor.
Does anyone know of a suitable motor and supplier for this car?
Thanks in advance.
in my left hand drive 1984 XJ-6, ( built June 1983 ), the wipers Park on the passenger side, so it looks that you got the wrong motor for a LHD XJ.
Yes, there is a rebuilder who sells tested wiper motors for Jaguar. He sells them on eBay USA.
His eBay seller name is Max. Located near Maryland in Delaware. He has been around for many years.
Contact him through eBay for the correct passenger-side-parking motor to Confirm it parks on the passenger side away from the Driver's line-of- sight.
**copy and paste the following ebay item number in the ebay Search box: 387121925116
NOTE: He requires a "core" or "exchange" wiper motor when selling his remanufactured motors. Otherwise he charges an additional $100.00 USD without a core.
Hi Jose, I found an article on a Jag forum which says its the same motor for LHD and RHD, its just the parking mechanism that you change round to suit the car. Could you tell me do they park flat or at an angle, and how much sweep do you get? As I can swap the parking over but need to know how much sweep is normal as I got to work on this car after the owner had taken off and scrapped the original motor.
Thanks, Steve.
Hello again Steve,
there are some details but I will try to be clear;
The below comments apply only for a Series 3, LHD, XJ-6 or 12 when one is sitting on the Driver's seat looking out:
1) when parking wipers towards the passenger side, you will need a smaller (11" inch) wiper blade on the Passenger side wiper arm, otherwise a normal 15" blade will scrub outside the windscreen and rub on the chromed trim when wipers are being used.
2) the arms and blades Park at a slight angle above the rubber seal. The factory Service Manual illustrates this with a measurement from a given point at the blades. The wiper arms do not allow for a "flat" Park due to their shape.
3) the sweep at the Driver's side is quite large, it goes from Park to Full sweep ( left-most corner of windscreen AND as long as the glass is wet), so it opens up the view quite large, and once the wipers are running, the Driver's side wipe reaches to about one-third of the Passenger side glass area.
4) these XJ wiper motors are very lazy and slow compared to the old DR3 Lucas wiper motors of the 1960's Jaguars, regardless of where they Park. Be aware of that. It's one big complaint of XJ owners. Unfortunately the old DR3 motors do not have the Single Wipe / Delay feature of the XJ. Otherwise they are 2-speed motors and quite fast. If you don't need the Delay feature, try a DR3 motor, the cable connects the same way mechanically, but I don't know about the wiring.
My post number 68 in the thread above from the Mk2 forum may help. There are a couple of pdf and a link to a useful website with more info. I think the series 1 and 2 XJ6 may have used the earlier type of motor different from the series 3 and similar to that on the Mk2.
Dave, the sweep looks alright but the Park is too high.
If you run the wipers over a dry windscreen, that is what you get.
The XJ wiper motor does not have enough torque to sweep on dry glass.
Maybe we should be looking for a different wiper motor.
one trick is to remove the arms from the splined shafts, allow the motor to run a few cycles, let it Park, THEN reinstall the arms at a lower angle.
Thanks Jose, the info is just what I needed and the pics are very helpful, the car is an `84 so series III as you say. We have the same wiper arms with the slight kink in the drivers side so I can see that they now will have parked on the passenger side.
We have a brand new motor from the UK but its a Lucas copy and parks for a RHD, so I can either try to swap the park mechanism around or we will buy a Lucas motor. The car belongs to a friends father and his son has a spray shop so they stripped all the lights and trim and wiper spindles out to do a full respray so now it looks like new, but they couldn`t remember where everything went so thats where I got involved putting the car back together and fixing dozens of electrical faults as I am a car mechanic and electrician and used to work for Jaguar when I lived in the UK and can get parts for them as they are Norwegian and don`t have the contacts I have for Jag parts.
This forum is a great source of info, and helped me with info for my X type, I have no faith in dealer workshops so do all my own repairs and diagnostics on my Jag, Volvo and Saab, being a former salesman for Sun Electric / Snap-on diagnostic equipment which I am sure you have heard of.
Volvo and Saab ! I owned a 1800-E and a 1800-ES from 1972 to 1979. Best cars of my life, especially the 1800-E with the B20 engine and manual overdrive.
In 1979 some guy saw me fueling the 1800-ES and offered $10k cash for it. I accepted and purchased a new 1979 Saab 900 Turbo. Big mistake ! Car was unreliable, broke down continuously. I still regret selling the Volvos.
On the subject of the LHD wiper motor, I have a spare motor from a 1984 if you cannot find one.
Thanks for the offer of the wiper motor, let me know how much you want for it with shipping if possible to Norway.
I have owned Saabs for 40 yrs from 99, 900 Turbo, 900 Talladega, my favourite was my 93 Aero which I had for 20 yrs and my wife has a 93 Sportcombi Biopower. I had no problems apart from general service items and one turbo.
And I was a Volvo car mechanic for many years on 240,260,340,740 etc and specialised in electrics, fuel injection repairs, and autobox rebuilds, and last year bought my first Volvo a V60 Ocean Race edition which I love, especially the 65 mpg on the highway.
I saw that you are in Florida, I have been over several times as I have friends in Miami and Tampa and Ocala, I have driven Jacksonville to Key West and east to west many times, I especially like the Keys having driven down there in a convertible 8 times as its a great drive, and had a friend at Cocoa Beach so have done Cape Canaveral Space Centre 3 times. And the firm I used to work for had two Nortech catamarans so I have been to the factory in Fort Myers as I had to keep them both running for my boss as I am now a boat mechanic.
My hobby is restoring classic cars and I have rebuilt 4 Volvo Amazons for a friend and made a sleeper with the stationwagon as I put a GT B20 in it and fitted an overdrive as the 4th gear ratio was too low.
Well thats me, thanks again for your help Jose, regards Steve.

Hi Jose,
I used that same procedure when I assembled them. I chose not to have the bottom of the drivers side wiper be forced over the window trim in park position. Because the sweep angle is fixed (90*?), if I lowered the park position I would loose coverage at full sweep. I think they would look better if parked lower, but you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
Just a note: the motor seems to have plenty of power with the relay conversion I did, no hesitation wet or dry.
Dave
