Default 1985 XJS 3.6 Smog Pump

I just bought a rare 1985 XJS 3.6L six 5-speed that is missing the air / smog pump and the bracket is broken. Does anyone know if a 1990 4.0L six bracket and pump will work on this motor? Any help with where to pick up parts for this motor would be appreciated as I've looked at Autozone and O'Reily's parts, and they only list the V-12 as a choice for anything.

Not sure if this is one of the (very rare) original USA market cars or a gray-market import but, either way, I'm betting that it uses a fairly generic GM style air injection pump of the type commonly used in the 70s and early 80s.

If the bracket is steel perhaps it can be welded?

Not sure about the interchange with 4.0 air injection parts.

You won't find engine-related parts for this car at mass mechandise vendors like Autozone O'Reillys. Only a very samll number (less than 50?) were officially imported to the USA.

Maybe, however, the air injection parts are the same as used on the 88-89 XJ6 with the 3.6 engine? Just a crazy guess.

Sorry I don't have good answers for you. If nobody chimes in on this forum contact George Camp at JCNA. I think he's well informed on this model, or can point you in the right direction.

Cheers

The bracket is part # EAC5958.
The pump is EAC8810
The clutch is EAC8811
A quick Goole found these:

Jaguar Parts detail from David Manners Ltd
Jaguar Parts detail from David Manners Ltd
Jaguar Parts detail from David Manners Ltd

You can find the parts listing on JDHT.com.

It appears these are the same as XJ6. You most likely have a "rare" car because it was not officially imported. The 80s saw a ton of Grey market vehicles. I worked in a dealer in those days and we saw tons of grey market cars. Getting parts was fun!

Actually, Greg, a handful (25? 50?) of USA-spec 3.6 5-speeds were brought in thru official channels as "market test cars". My understanding is that most were used by Jaguar Corporate employees and then sold thru normal dealer networks.

Of course others were brought in via the grey market.

I knew of 3 in the Fort Worth TX area back in the late 1980's.
The Jaguar dealer down the road would NOT work on the cars so the repair shop I worked at took them in as ORPHANS.

They ALL had the manual gearbox transmissions (same as the TR7).

I still have a factory air filter in the original box somewhere in my stack of parts!!

I knew of 1 of these cars back in the late 80s too. A dealer friend had bought it at the auction when it was 2 or 3 years old. He drove it for a year or so but being a dealer everything has it's price. I do know getting parts for it involved phone calls to Jaguar in NJ and many times waiting for parts from the UK.

Doug,

To your point yes I guess Jaguar did import some of these but never officially for sale in the showroom. But anyway why split hairs.

Bob,

I remember at the auctions in my area in the late 80s early 90s and trying to buy a few Jaguars to retail, along with other luxury imports, and getting outbid by a Texan. He would buy 2-3 truckloads every time Jaguar would run their off lease vehicles. I got talking to him one time and he "let" me win a few auctions so I could sell them. He was from the Dallas area. I remember him to this day. I guess a guy with cowboy boots and a cowboy hat stands out in CT/NY area. Not too mention he paid close to retail for them. You used to have be careful about buying grey market cars in those days. I once bought a grey market Saab to retail and that thing was a huge headache to get parts for.

Thanks for the part numbers Greg Edge, I bought the 1990 XJ6 4.0 smog pump and bracket. Hopefully the bracket is correct, if not I'll take it off and have it welded. I need to get a factory repair manual for this car now.
