Welcome to the fold. The pump is on the front of the engine, on the UK passenger side, about level with the water pump and its pulley is driven by the same belt as the water pump. It has a cap on top with a little dipstick attached to it. The cap is hard to see the first time you look but a torch and looking just behind the pulley will find it. Check the level first, check the belt tightness and perhaps change the fluid before doing anything more drastic?

The pump just unbolts, and apart from access problems (welcome to V12 XJS land) is not in principle hard to change.

Always was curious on how all of you change out/drain the Power steering fluid?

On the V12 undo the high pressure outlet and low pressure return at the back of the pump and drain. This will change 70% at least I guess. If you really want to get more, undo the unions on the rack (easyish on a RHD car).

A suction pump with the hose in the fluid reservoir will work. Or even a turkey baster.
Or you can remove the return hose from the back of the pump and just let the oil drain. Messy, though ! Of course you'll never get *all* the fluid out. There's still oil in the rack itself and all the pipes and hoses.

Or find the lowest hose/lowest connection in the system, undo it, and let the fluid drain.

Or a combination of methods.

Cheers

I have tried the small hose in the reservoir but it really does not get much out. Not sure I want to remove any PS hoses and make a mess. LOL... Guess I'll just keep taking out a few ounces every few weeks.

Hopefully Dave, that started this thread, only needs to add some ATF/Lucas powering steering fluid to cure his noise.

Yeah, check the fluid level first before spending money.

I know people that have used Lucas Power Steering fluid to help with noise, seaping and other issues. It does seem to work well...

Welcome, I to am a recent purchaser of an XJS 1985 and had noise and leaking from the power steering unit, the car had been sitting a long time, I used Lucas P S stop leak and with the engine warm went wheel lock to lock about 3 times and it cleared it up. Good Luck

Hi Dave, I'm in Bournemouth too - if you see a white '89 v12 around it's probably me!
