Default 1993 XJS 4.0 Rear Bearing Rebuild and Tolerances ?

Hello…thanks to everyone for help as I have now finished rebuilding the axle stub bearings. I am now finishing up rebuilding the rear wheel bearings in the carrier hub.

I am a bit confused after reading various threads about how to set the bearing tolerances. Here’s my confusion:

1. When I disassembled the halfshafts from the hubs all I had was a bronze/phosphorus washer and a conical spacer - no shims whatsoever
2. I read that if all you are doing is replacing the bearings and races you can reuse the bronze/phosphorus washer and conical spacer, torque the axle shaft nut to 120 ft lbs and I’m done ??

So, I don’t think I need to do any measurements or add shims to make sure I have Zero end float ?

any thoughts or comments would be much appreciated

thanks

JB

Awesome ! That’s what I have done and torqued the axle nuts to 120 lb ft. ….much easier than shimming etc

thanks soooo much

Jaguar already did all the hard work of setting up that particular hub.
A fresh cast hub and new bearings require a painstaking procedure to get the bearing preload correct.
I prefer to let the factory do it when it is assembled. Bearing tolerances are tight so no discernible difference should be noted with a simple bearing relube or replacement.
