1996 xjs Ski slope wood
To all,
Does anyone happen to know the type of wood veneer used on the 1996 xjs? I am assuming they are all the same type with different but similar pattern.
I am considering on redoing my ski slope….signs of cracking starting to appear.
Trying to consider best options for repair.
Thanks for your input

To elaborate, sapwood walnut.
Jaguar had their own sawmill and made all their own veneers at that time. All of the wood for a particular car would have come from a single tree. If the finish is cracking, you might try talking to a professional wood restorer to see about getting it refinished. British auto wood has an excellent reputation, and I believe they are in Florida (but I'm not sure). The veneer is very thin (on the order of 0.040" thick) so it's really easy to sand through if you try and refinish it.
I would always try and get your wood restored if possible, then the grain and colour will match the rest of the car. A replacement piece of wood can never match the grain and pattern of the rest

Hi,
I had never thought of this approach. Did the old lacquer lift of easily? How did you stop the veneer coming away with the lacquer? Did you treat the whole piece or just the parts where the lacquer was cracked / loose / missing?
Cheers,
LeeP

I was lucky. All, except a couple of corners, lifted off easily. At these corners, the veneer did come away so I sanded off the lacquer and reattached. The ease of removal will depend on age and sun exposure. The complete dash, four pieces, was done.
