Default 89 V12 Yellow Cooling Fan Replacement

Hello,

I've heard from multiple sources now on this forum that the yellow bladed fan is prone to exploding and taking out multiple things on the car, and it has been on my list of stuff to do. I've finally decided to do it; I bought a parts car recently and asked the owner what killed the car. He said the fan blade exploded and took out the radiator, and that was the final straw for him. Time to replace! I've heard about electric fans but would like to have the opportunity to drive the car a little bit this summer, I'll probably go electric eventually but that's more of a winter project for me.

After some searching I have found that part number EBC4553 is what I need for my four bolt fan ('89 5.3), I believe. Pretty cheap on SNG, all things considered:

SNG Barratt - The Ultimate Jaguar Parts Specialist

But I'm also interested in replacing the clutch. I'll test mine to be sure but with a 27 year old car, it could probably use with being replaced anyway. I found this on eBay:

Radiator Cooling Fan Clutch New Jaguar XJS Vanden Plas XJ6 96 91 90 89 88 87 86 | eBay

$20 seems a little too good to be true. Does this look like the part that I'm looking for? I couldn't find the part on SNG and don't have the time to call them up at the moment.

If anyone who has done this fan swap/clutch replacement recently could help me make sure that I'm ordering the correct parts, I would appreciate it!

The price does seem a bit low. Check with the supplier that it is the equivalent of part number 2 in this diagram (EAC4751 superseded by
NBC2215AA:

Cooling Fan and Drive Unit-5.3 Litre - Parts For XJS from (V)139052 to (V)179736 | Jaguar Classic Parts UK
The item you have found might be for the 6 cylinder engine, for example. Checking part number correctness with the JCP site is always a good plan, as if a part supplied is incorrect and you have specified the part number, making the supplier refund you is much easier.

How about a NAPA fan clutch 274328 for about $50.00

I just bought one for my V12. Looks and fits fine, 'appears' to be good quality. Hard to know what you're buying these days....but NAPA stuff is generally good.

Cheers

Thanks for sharing, this is a cheap clutch(the one on ebay)!

I am looking at fan EAC3263 (or alt # EAC9367) and already ordered clutch EAC4751(replaced by NBC2215AA) for my 1985 with 3.6 engine. Both available at rock auto for $68 and $47. But it is confusing with all these part numbers... looks like we use the same clutch but different fans.

Hope yours fit your car.

Thanks for the posts, everyone! This forum never fails to impress.

I'll order the fan from SNG regardless. I'll see if I can't get a fan clutch from Napa and make it work, thank you for that tip Doug. If you installed it and it fit, that's enough confirmation for me. I can always compare it to the stock clutch and take it back if needed, but I don't think that will be an issue. I'm assuming that the Series III V12 is the same as the XJS V12, as that's what it says on SNG's site.

I would go with the OEM if I had the cash, but this car nickle and dimes me enough as it is! I'd like to be able to replace both at once; it would be dumb to buy a new fan blade and have the clutch go out after I replaced it.

Thanks again!

Hey everyone, one final question. I'm going to purchase the fan today, part number EBC4553, from SNG. I also am in need of a coolant hose that has a pinhole, but looking through the catalog I can't find it pictured. It's on the back RH side of the motor. I pulled down a picture form wikipedia and marked it, as the picture I took doesn't show the location that well.

The actual hose, you can see the coolant spraying out of it toward the bottom of the hose. It's the hose in the center of the picture.

Any help identifying what part number this is would be appreciated, I'd like to be able to order this pretty soon as well. I don't like to drive my cat with issues like this!

Thanks!

That is the heater hose that takes hot water from the engine to the heater valve on the firewall. It is the part numbered 22 on this diagram

Part no. C41051 | Heater water valve parts from Jaguar Classic Parts UK
But honestly, the best thing to do is to buy a hose kit complete and do the lot.

Thanks for the info, Greg. That was able to help me track down the part number of the hose that I need, C43999.

For reference for future readers, SNG's part number for the hose kit is HK029. It includes that hose that I need, and is $95 as of this posting.

Doug,

I recently replaced the fan and not the clutch, which was a mistake. The short story is that I'm going to dive back in and replace the clutch as well. I read in Kirby Palm's book that the newer black fan doesn't fit some typical replacement clutches very well, due to a decreased diameter in the black fan. I wanted to ask what fan you have fitted to your V12. I like the thought of a cheaper off-the-shelf Napa part if it will fit. Do you have the yellow fan or the newer black one?

The fan replacement went easily, and it wouldn't have been any harder to replace the clutch if I had had one to put in. I'll post more pictures when I go back in and replace the clutch for people here to use.

I have a black fan but I don't know if it is Jaguar or aftermarket. Never investigated one way or the other. The NAPA clutch mated to the fan with no problems.

I think the replacement fans have been manufactured by multiple companies over the years which might account for some "fit" problems

Cheers

For the record, I went through the rest of the cooling system as well, and that discussion can be found here. This forum is great, and it certainly made this project a lot easier!

I have put the new black fan (Jaguar OEM) on several V12 cars. To clarify: the centre hub is a bit smaller which makes the blades longer because the outside diameter of the fan is the same as that of the original white fan (white when it left the factory, yellow because of heat and age). The black fan fits the OEM torquatrol unit perfectly.
