Post 89 XJS Code Reader

Is there a connection for a code reader to read faults? I want to have it all checked out.

Thanks.

Of all the many, many lights I've seen illuminate on my XJS dash, I don't believe the dreaded 'CHECK ENGINE' is one of them. I'm not certain the 89s have OBD, but I could be wrong. One of the experts will chime in soon enough.

It has a rudimentary OBD that displays codes on the trip computer display. No scan-tool plug-in that I'm aware of.

AFAIK if a fault comes along the code just pops up on the display. Not 100% sure about that...maybe there's a way to pull a code.

Cheers
DD

Doug is correct the ODB codes are displayed on the trip computer. To display codes switch ignition off wait 5 seconds and turn ignition to II do not start the engine the codes will be displayed on the tip computer as FF + XX where XX is the numeric code

I haven't seen a list it is in the ROM 1988.5 5.3 6.0 supplement under each function. If your engine check light is not on then you have no codes stored. When the codes are displayed on the Trip Computer they will not move to the next code until the failure associated with that code is rectified.

Sorry fellas, the 1989 XJS has no onboard diagnostics at all. It only has a red feedback monitor hookup [with a blanking cap] back near the fueling ECU in the boot. It was used for mixture setup and that's pretty much it.

The trip computer fault code readout didn't arrive until 1992.

Cheers,
